Enjoying the visits of a large Piliated Woodpecker

My husband is an excellent carpenter and he builds wooden woodpecker feeders that are virtually starling and grackle proof and cedar bat houses for friends and family. We have a couple of large Piliated Woodpeckers that love to frequent our special feeder. I make a homemade "suet" feed to stuff into it that the woodpeckers absolutely love. We get numerous visits from Redheaded woodpeckers with this special feed too! I make a blend of chunky peanut butter, vegetable shortening, cornmeal, oats, flour, cracked corn, raisins, black oil sunflower seeds and mixed birdseed. This mix is perfect for continuing to feed the woodpeckers & nuthatches during the summer months because there is no lard or beef renderings to go rancid and make the birds sick!
