Vickie Estep Quilt Gardens are Worth the Sacrifice

Here's my latest blog. It's been a busy summer for me so I've been gone a while. I'll try to do better but no gardener can promise anything until the snow flies :)

carole lawton Where have all the Robins gone?

Where are all the Robin's and song birds in South Jersey? My garden is usually filled with birds in the summer. The birds started to disappear in mid July. The only birds around are a few Doves. Could the extreme prolonged heat be the problem?

Sharon N Dodge Herbs, veggies and flowers

We had an herb farm for a few years as I got started later in life around 60 yrs old but loved it. Now its to much work for my husband anI. I graduated from Clayton College of Natural hHealth as a certified Master Herbalist and also went to school to be a reflexologist. I still grow herbs to make medicine and teas as well as cooking. I always have had a garden being raised in the country on farms and still live in the country on 10 acres. We still enjoy canning as much as possible as well as

Bernadette It's Mosaic Monday ... Pink and Purple in my End-of-Winter Downunder Garden

Winter's drawing to a close here in Oz and right now there's a lot of lovely pink and purple in the garden.

In the latest post on one of my gardening blogs there are some great photos of two of my absolute favourite flowering plants for adding these soft, fluffy, feel-good colours: Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' and Azaleas.

Rhonda Fleming Hayes Fennel, Fennel, How Do I Love Thee?

I'm not talking about the fancy fennels; not bulb fennel, not bronze fennel, but green fennel. Foeniculum vulgare, yet there's nothing vulgar about this versatile herb. Fennel, fennel, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

With apologies in advance to Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Jennifer Koester Evening at the Park

The evening was cool, the live music from the Big Bands and Bigger Beers event was a special treat and as always, there were a few park goers to chat with as I tended my plots. Once the last of the weeds were pulled, Darryl and I stashed the garden tools, his chair and book in the car and spent the remaining daylight strolling about the park.

Cathy Hennessy Slow Saturday

While most times I would be at odds with the rain, but today the rain brings a joyous relief from the non-stop burden of high temps combined with unusually high humidity. The birds, squirrels and even my horse seem to have the same sense of relief as well. I put out feed since the birds are vociferously asking for some and even their chirps seem melodic versus stressful.

My resident 'flys are hiding, but I imagine they too are enjoying a moment of coolness.

Janice Johnson What can I plant that will last?

I live in Ocala FL and have a 12' round circle in my backyard where I took up a pool from that is made up of sand. Can anyone tell me what to plant in there that will last all year and won't die off we have a mild frost? I think it can get down to maybe 19 degrees here in the winter. I wanted to put something in there that was colorful. I have a lot of knock out roses that do well, but wanted to put something in there that is "different" Thanks for your help!

Alison Clarke Green Manure - a question

Without getting into a big discussion about rotating the place one plants tomatoes (although if you'd like to comment on that please do), this is a question I am asking not just for myself but for my sister.

Does anyone have any recommendations/information/stories on green manure? Do you plant it? It is to enrich the soil, yes? I have a decent sized garden and have been able to not plant tomatoes in *quite* the same place every year, but some people just don't, i.e. my sister.

Jennifer Koester Ginkgo the Living Fossil

In the spirit of full disclosure, the Ginkgo is my favorite tree. There are many trees I hold in high regard and would eagerly include in a landscape. But it is the Ginkgo that holds the top spot with me.

Lydia, it sounds like you have a much bigger groundhog problem than I do! Funny thing is that our groundhog does not touch the tomatoes (although the chipmunks eat the ones that hang low on the plants). I guess that's because he is so obsessed with…
