I love the way this looks but how do you maintain it without stepping on plants? Sweet use of a small space.

The latest I know of is the Pheasant's Eye Daffodil, Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus. It blooms in early May here in Denver, z5.

Does anyone know of Daffodil varieties that bloom in May under Zone 5 conditons?  I want to create a low maintenance bulb garden that blooms beginning of May to beginning of June.  I have Alliums and Siberian Iris for the later part of the season, b…

Here is an interesting website. http://www.bartramsgarden.org/ John Bartram was the forefather of the native plant movement. His practice of exporting plant material back to europe however, would probably put him at odds with current native plant en…

That is a fabulous colored phlox! I'm looking for more vibrant colored varieties. I'll have to write this on my wish list.

The tiarellas look great. I have a variety with the same leaf pattern but mine send out trailing stems (think strawberries) and root everywhere. It was cute the first year or two, but now I'm annoyed! lol

Memory Garden

Like most gardeners, I've had certain people in my life that nurtured and encouraged my interest. One of my gardening mentors passed away last week. My aunt was 84 years old, and she put her vegetable garden in the first week in June. She is no longer here to harvest it, but I know she would be pleased that her daughter will have the fruits of her labor. If you are a gardener, you are a gardener till the end. The garlic I grow every year is from heads that she gave me. I look around my garden to… Continue

LeeAnn ~ it's very nice to meet you ! Yes, Hartville is Home Sweet Home for me ... left the city of Akron at the age of 19 and headed for some fresh country air . My family home is still in Akron , with my daughter now owning it , after my parents had passed away. My dad was my mentor in the Garden , he called me " Daddys little Sunshine Shadow "! Your Blog about Gardenind Mentors in our life brought tears to my eyes, as I have had the wonderful Blessing of having many ! Although I never knew my Dads Mother, Im told I am alot like her , in the paths of my Gardening ... makes me happy that she passed her love and values of Gods ever planting inheritance to me through her Blood flow. I hear she was a small but mighty dirt digger , as she threw weeds over the Mountain side that she lived on deep into WVa ... they believe they had it hard , and that I do believe too but can you imagine having the luxary of just pitching those weeds and never having to pick them up and hawl them away !!! My home now , once was my Mennonite Mother inlaws and she passed it very relunctantly to us, because she knew how much she'd miss her hands in that dirt ..... I wrote a blog about her ,if you'd like to check it out sometime. You have a great day and thanks for your invite !

Thanks for the comments about my cannas. We have some leaf damage this year....about the same as most years. Not sure if its beetles...I always refer to them as no-see-ums.....I see the damage but I never see who or what is doing it!! =D

Yes, you do need to thin them out. I go in spurts on whether I like them or not. I did leave some in for height and when I get tired of them I cut them off!

Leeann, I would think September would still be fine for visiting Chanticleer, the reason being that they aren't as focused on flowers (no annuals in sight), but rather texture and interesting foliage in a more natural setting. My sister in law is a master gardener who came down from Ct. just to see Chanticleer and that was the end of August, and she was very impressed.
