I've seen a living wall at Disney's Flower & Garden Festival but I don't know what framework was used. I'm looking for some kind of outdoor system for my concrete retaining wall.

Living Walls are a wonderful way to bring your garden indoors. When I saw the first picture of a living wall that was all succulents, I knew this was the direction I wanted to go not only with my gardening, but as my next and last business.

Thanks, Tammy. He loves to dig, usually in the wrong places, so this kept him focused in 1 place. Not sure how it will stand up to our FL downpours. We'll see.

I've seen these in several areas in Disney World. They are very tropical looking but I can't identify them. Help? These are in a very shady area.

I wish I had rocks to unearth here in Florida. Just sand though and I miss rocks!

Hi Pauline. I used to dig up lots of glass and pottery (certainly not ancient!) in my previous yard. I learned that the lot had been sold later than many others in the area and had also been used for a junk yard, but more like in the 60s. In my curr…

After living all our lives in Massachusetts, my husband's company transferred him to Florida during the winter. We were in the same house for 32 yrs and had to leave behind the gardens I had made and the plants I enjoyed. Making things worse, the new owner did not take care of them.
Our house in Florida was pretty much a blank slate except for the obligitory palm tree, pittosporum hedge and - yes - fake flowers stuck in the ground!
I've done a lot of reading and studying local gardens in the past 2 yrs, not wanting to make mistakes that I'll regret 10-20 yrs from now. I have some small annual/perennial beds, a new shrub border and lots of container plantings. We had to take out a diseased sago palm and the pittosporum in the front yard but haven't replaced them yet. Considering Indian Hawthorn, a cold hardy palm and annuals for color.
I'm looking forward to the challenge of gardening year-round.

Canna bargains and wayward cucumber?

I just bought 2 Canna - Tropicana and Tropicana Gold in 2 gal. pots - at Lowes for only $3.99 each. First leaves are starting to look bad and no flowers so they went to the mark-down area. New shoots with great leaves coming up, even coming out of the drainage holes! Will put them in the ground ASAP. gotta love it!

And I went out to pull some weeds from my lawn and I think I have a wayward cucumber growing next to the street! I had some new St. Augustine grass installed and between the

What have you unearthed?

Well, Alison Clarke's post started me thinking about objects we dig up while gardening. When I lived in Massachusetts, we kept finding rusted metal objects of all shapes and sizes. And glass pieces would continually work their way to the surface - the lawn as well as the gardens - not good with kids playing there. Even found a horseshoe once (thankfully no horse attached). We eventually found out that the land had been used as a junk yard for old cars......Model A's, T's.....a long, long time ag… Continue

HOA rules becoming 'Florida friendly'

Until now, our Homeowners Assoc. rules have been pretty strict regarding front yards. Only St. Augustine grass, no more than 25% of the area non-lawn, etc. Houses are close together with small front lawns and uniform landscaping does enhance the look. The builder gave each house a palm tree, magnolia tree and/or live oak. Now, 6 yrs later, we can see that most were planted without regard for the mature sizes. I've restricted my plantings in front to the two existing garden beds and containers

Cypress Gardens sold

It was just announced that Cypress Gardens, including the botanical gardens, was sold to the company that owns Legoland. It will be interesting to see what they do there.

Farewell Cypress Gardens

For those who might not have heard, Cypress Gardens in Florida has closed. Although various buyers have tried to keep it going, this looks like the end. The company said it has begun negotiations with several potential buyers and lessees interested in acquiring all or parts of the property.
I bet a lot of you have seen it's wonderful gardens and water-skiing shows since it opened in 1936. Consider yourselves the lucky ones. The last time my husband and I visited, only the gardens were open durin… Continue

Good thought on the rain barrels! Will check that out. I am done planting for now too - until later in the fall when I will add mums to my garden and then, in the winter when I will plant more bulbs!

I know!!! We were flabbergasted! I do not want my beloved Enchanted Garden to suffer but, I am also such a conservationist and recycler! We are looking into the possibilities of reclaimed water and are also inclined to get rain barrels - from Home Depot - the last few days, I could have contained many gallons!!! (of course, I do not need it now - ha! My plants are saturated!) Still assessing and planning a good scheme!
