LOL Charlie ... I think I'll stick with the purple ones and do the extra work to get rid of the bitterness ... somehow green eggplants don't look like eggplants ... lol.

There are 2 ways that I know of to get rid of the bitterness in eggplants - (1) my mum taught me to take the slices, put them in a colander/strainer, sprinkle salt over them (the underside will get the salt from the slices under them), let them sit…

Good post, Natasha I've always wondered also ... haven't "googled" for it as yet. I know that there is a way to do it - but, don't know what it is. There have been times when I wished I had saved the seeds from my tomato crop 3 yrs ago - the fruits…

I love water lilies... did you know that they are on the endangered species list in New Hampshire??? I remember as a child taking the canoe out and paddling into a small cove near the house and gathering a few leaves and some of the flowers for my m…

Somewhere I saw a picture of one of those trash bins with wheels that had penny-sized holes poked into the sides - it was used as a composter... has anyone tried that style???

Hi Hildegarde ... I'm in central Ohio (Columbus to be exact). I bought my house almost 6yrs ago - the land it sits on was once part of a florist/greenhouse complex located very near to downtown. My soil does lean towards clay in some areas of the lo…

Alice ... I don't live in your area ... but, with a greenhouse gathering all that lovely sun ... I don't see why not. What is the lowest temperature that you experience during the winter?? Check with your local (or nearest) agricultural department o…

Charlie - I know what you mean... I remember, as a kid, not liking cooked carrots but loved them raw ... I also went through a stage where I didn't like onions. Having lived in Greece for almost 18yrs. - I developed a taste to "strange" foods ... bu…

I hope to put up an average-sized greenhouse within the next year or so ... a 4ft wide x 6 or 8ft long. I would love being able to grow veggies all year around - saving pennies here and there are a must on my very limited income. I can just picture…

Robert, I agree with you on what you said - I always tell people (not my daughter, she has the same taste in food as I do) ... try it at least once & if you don't like it, fine & if you like it, great ... but don't say you don't like something witho…

My Landscaping Project

Over the last 3 or 4 weeks, I have been working on what I call a fairly major project in my backyard.
When I purchased the house back in the fall of 2003, there was a 24-ft. dia. above-ground pool - since I really didn't use it, I finally took it down about 2 yrs ago (salvaged the metal) ... the result was a sand pit which my doggies loved to play in. Since then, I have transplanted a couple of tree saplings (that had sprouted in other parts of the property) and lots of different plants started to come up. There was one section that hadn't "developed" in that direction as yet, so I decided to use some materials that I had on hand to up-grade the area.
Using the thin cement blocks, I made a step-down in a half-moon in the portion that was not level with the ground. I then took some salvaged bricks I had and made a small mini patio (pie wedge without the peak) bordering it with pieces of 4 x 4 lumber (left over from when the previous owners had put in a deck, gazebo, and 6-ft. privacy fencing). I then proceded to prepare the area on either side of the mini patio and the back area of the patio for planting. A good friend gave me lots of bamboo cuttings from his garden - they went into the area that would be the peak of the pie wedge. A wildflower (annual and perennial) seed mixture was scattered over the newly top-soiled areas on either side - they are starting to sprout.
Since I still had plenty of 4 x 4s left over, I dug up a path between the deck and the new mini patio - using the wood to edge the path and filling in with brick nuggets.
This morning (no classes), I transplanted 6 perennial plants into pots and 6 into the ground at the front corners of the mini patio. I had some bulbs left over from a frontyard project - these I put into a container that I put at one of the corners of the sand pit/mini patio and the new pathway.
Hopefully, I will have pics taken to post by the end of the week.
It was an exhausting project as lots of digging was involved - but well worth the fatigue.

I live in the middle of the country between Alliance, Minerva, and Louisville. If you don't know where that is it is close to Canton which is a little bigger. You sound like my son...he travels everywhere and has lived in Australia, Norway, Sweden, and Portugal. He went to grad school in Norway and loves that country. I don't know if he has ever been to Greece but I will ask him. He travels all over Europe and South America with his job. But when he is home in Indianapolis he is an avid gardener.

I am familiar with German Village. My son and daughter-in-law stop there every time the visit from Indianapolis at a deli that they love! Wow! New York to south Florida to Ohio!! Three different and very unique areas. Nice that you have a large area in which to garden. My son lives in downtown Indie in the Cottage Home area where he has the tiniest of gardens you can imagine. But they manage to grow so much and even sell some things to some of the restaurants in the downtown area.

Greetings fellow Ohioan! You live in one of my favorite areas of our state. I actually lived there many, many years ago and taught school. We have a dear friend who lives in Dublin which is a charming area.
