Their seed pods are huge...I will have plenty.
Yes, these are Hardy Hibiscus...they will die down completely here and reappear in the Spring. The red and the white are in the same bed.
Thank y ou all.
I did not prune my plants to the ground. To be sure, I do not know if I am suppose to cut back the Clemetis? I just let the brown leaves stay on the short trellis, and hope for the best. What am I suppose to do with them? Patricia
Hi PJ, Happy Spring,
I will understand if the seeds are not forthcoming. What are your plans for this year's garden. Hope to hear from you soon. Bygones! Patricia
PJ, Outstanding! I am so happy, albeit trepedatious. I have never started Clematis seeds, you'll have to walk me through it. I do have a brand new, never been used AeroGarden Pro 100. I know that I can get inserts for germination to put into it. The machine turns on and off the grow lights automatically. It has fertilizer tablets, and is rather hydroponic. Have you used one of these before? I thought that it would be good to start seeds for the spring, but thought that I would start with the Herb Garden that came prepackaged with it, first. I want to thank you so much for the time you have put into finding and sending me these seeds. I do not know anything about 4 o'clocks, other than they are a vine, and open about 4 PM, is that right? And the Hardy Hybiscus, I can't wait...are they the ones that grow upright, with the dinner plate sized flowers (had two of those once, but lost them when I sold that house), or are these the low growning bush type? If they are the tall type, I will add them to the backyard garden behind the Cranes, and if low and bushy, those I will plant on the back fence line, which other than just the front of the house, is the only place that gets a lot of sun. I am very excited, thank you so much. I sure hope that your yard man didn't demolish your other Clematis. Poor thing, you know what it will be thinking about all winter, "what the heck happened to me?-:) Patricia
PJ, Thank you so much, I would really appreciate seeing that beautiful color in my garden. How should I prune these climbers? Because of the fact that they rebloom on old wood. Now I did go to this website: http://www.donahuesclematis.com/culture.html, and this is what "Donahue's Greenhouse - Clematis Culture" had to say. "Prune Clematis as needed to maintain vigorous growth. Vigorous growth will make the plants more resistant to disease and will also force the root system to grow faster and fill out the container. Leave 2 sets of nodes from the crown to the first pinch". (My question, the crown means the top? Does that mean tht one should continue to pinch back the plant while it grows? I just do not get anything out of this directive) The insert continues to say, "Later pinches leave 2 sets of nodes from the previous pinch. Pruning will increase branching of the Clematis and will also develop a strong root system. Stop pruning 6 to 8 weeks before targeted sales date to produce a blooming Clematis". Now I know that this website is for a commercial wholesaler, but as you can see, the information does not answer my questions, which have to do with the bundle of top heavy growth with which I am dealing. Can you help? Patricia
Hi PJ, My name is Patricia, and I am a new Clematis person...I know nothing about them, other that that fuscia Clematis is so beautiful, and I too would love some seeds. Of course, along with what to do with them, and to ask, are the pointy pin cushions left after the bloom fades, is that were the seeds are housed. If so, I tried to ferret them out, but they seemed soooooo small. Help, Please. Patricia Schaeffer-Jobe, 6723 Alabama Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63111. (Oh, and how many colors are there, and what to I do with the bunch of brown, vines left? I have found out that they bloom from old wood, but you should see the mess I have, and with only to vines climbing the obelisks. What should I do when they get top heavy? Oh my, I really need this group. Help!
I've found that heucheras don't like an unamended, heavy clay soil. My best success with them, including 'Palace Purple', is to add some compost or other soil amendment. Even in Missouri, the purple ones color up best with lots of sun.
Sounds wonderful Judy. Nice to have a great afternoon with the kids.I bet that was a lot of fun watching their "concert" I love kids laughter-Oh especially babies. Cracks me up.
