- Hi Maryann, Hope I can help, I use a fertilizer for blooming shrubs usually with a 5-10-5 ...Nitrogen,Phosphate,potach. Since I am do not know your area at all I would check with your local nursery for their suggestions. I prune in the fall as soon as the blooms are finished down to a good leaf growth. Mine bloom on old wood so you do it in the fall so the plant can set buds for the next year
