I have planted the Double Red color and the Carefree Sunshine Yellow. I have probably 60 plants in Northern Virginia. I have been told that my yard is the showplace in my neighborhood. Other that water, occassional bug spray in early spring for ap…

Gardener's Prayer

The sun is just rising over the horizon,
shafts of light brighten the darkness,
as the light of day once more graces this earth.
My heart feels deep gratitude
for this earth created by my use.
My thankful heart opens my senses,
and expands my awareness of all around me!
Look at the beautiful greenery!
The trees, shrubs, plants, even the weeds,
they're beautiful!
See the fruits & vegetables
produced by plants of this earth for my use.
The flavors, the textures, the colors!
The plants are nourished by this earth
just as I am.
They grow where they are planted,
and need water, sun and nourishment.
Just as I do as a human living on this earth.
But I have to work by the sweat of my brow
to provide a good environment for these plants to grow.
I am becoming like God.
I am a child of God,
having success thru my efforts
caring for my little patch of earth,
working by the sweat of my brow
all the days of my life tilling the earth.
As I work,
appreciation for my efforts,
and the blossoming earth around me
fills my heart with joy,
I pray as I work in my garden,
and then leaning on my hoe,
I see shafts of light illuminate the greenery,
as once more I feel the sun's warmth,
blessing my garden.

New to GardenersIndex April 30, 2009

Hi all!

I moved to Northern Virginia 10 years ago from Maryland. Nothing but shale rock to put the roots into! Now I LOVE rock, but I prefer it above the ground. So disappointing to an enthusiastic gardener. I had to bring in hardscape to raise the beds and dump truck load after load of rich black topsoil later, we finally are getting somewhere! My raised beds will soon be filled with my squarefoot vegetable, herb, flower and berry gardens.

Despite all that shale rock my Double Red Knockout an… Continue

Holy schmoley, Lindsay - your photos are gorgeous! You're either a professional photographer, or that's some excellent camera you got there. Loved them all!

WOW, Lindsay, you take such beautiful pictures!!! I always try to capture the moment when a bee or butterfly lands on a flower I've grown, or when a squirrel or bunny stops by to rest under a tree in my yard. I hope that, someday, I'll have pictures of animals and nature to share as pretty as you do!!!!!

Hi again Lindsay, I just had to tell you I LOVE your Duck picture. This is a photo that looks as if you can just walk right in a feel like you can touch the ducks.. Wildlife is something that is missed by many and not appreciated by alot of city folk. I was brought up in the country...now called urban and we could watch the turkeys, deer, phesants, Quail, snakes, and most other small animals. I have many older pictures of gulls in the "Walmart" parking lots in the Pittsburgh area. It is a site to see people feeding them in a parking lot that is nowhere near any water. The color in that picture is so vivid. Keep up the great work.

Hey there! I have enjoyed the pictures of your gardens. Though I am from Iowa, when my husband and I were first married we picked up our roots and moved to Middletown, Md. and lived in the area for 4 years before returning back to the midwest. Though we have been home for several years now, the eastcoast is where I caught the garden bug. There are so many beautiful plants, trees and flowers out there, and what I would do to be able to grow a dogwood out here! Keep up the good work!
