I'm in Southern Illinois, zone 6. Usually I'll start my next crop of onions in July/August. I've tried potates in late summer, and we get a few, but not as many as the first crop. I always plant some fall lettuces, spinach, raddish, etc. whose succe…
I'm in NC, so actually a little north of you, and this is the time of year when we start putting in our winter crops - most of the cole crops (cabbages, kale, broccoli, etc.) and carrots and radishes. I've actually had better luck waiting until the…
I live in Michigan (Zone 5) I plant my rosemary as an annual. I usually by plants from a local store and plant in large pots than can be placed in my herb garden and moved as necessary. Last year I brought my rosemary pots into the garage and they l…
Indoors, simulate the "California winter": very cool nights, cool sunny days, evenly moist soil. Dry roots=dead rosemary. I keep upright rosemary in huge fiberglass planters in commercial potting soil. In winter it is moved to a basement room with a…
I live in Ohio and have to move many of my herbs inside for the winter. I dug up my rosemary plant this year and placed it in a 6 inch plastic pot. I water it every two weeks and keep sphagnum moss around the plant. It looks great, smells wonderful…
Rosemary is a warmer climate plant. Here in Pennsylvania, it is more an annual than an herb. I plant it outside for the summer and now that it is mid November I will put it in a pot and bring it in. Right now we are having Indian Summer
Kimberly, I live in zone 6, and I have successfully wintered over my rosemary 3 years in a row. We have not had a lot of snow cover, but was freezing quite often. This year might be different with the expected snowfall. In the fall I post stakes aro…
I have had several Rosemary plants for several years in zone 5. I got the original plants from Shady Acres Herb Farm in Minnesota. http://www.shadyacres.com/ Part of my success has been getting more hardy varieties, then potting them up regularly. I…
You could try digging and potting it, you have nothing to lose!! When you dig it, make sure you get as large a root-ball as you can. It may slow the growth down and the plant may look terrible but if you can keep it alive throughout the winter, you…
Sue, I can understand the cultural shock as I was born and raised in N. California and am now in the NE corner of Indiana. What I have done though to keep Rosemary surviving all winter long here is to plant it in a cold frame along with other herbs.…
Kimberly,
I live in zone 5 also. There really is no way to protect rosemary in this zone although I did have a friend that planted one under the drier vent outside her house. That may work in a mild winter but last year we had 2 nights in a row with…
So, there is no way to protect the rosemary plant in Zone 5? I was hoping I could put a rose cone over it or something...no? Since I planted it in the ground, can I replant it in a pot and bring it inside? or should I just resolve myself to planting…
I've enjoyed the tour of your veggie garden. Everything looks very healthy, I'm sure you are having a good harvest! I just planted my first veggie garden here in Florida using the square foot method. Thanks for sharing!
Linda, I don't know about your rosemary but your vegetables are amazing. My rosemary is going "great guns" but my veggies are pathetic. I guess the tomatoes are good but the gourds, peppers, cucumbers and beans are not where they should be at this time of year. I have raised beds like yours (complete with the dish in the background...felt like I was looking at my own pictures) and I add some manure and some lime to the soil every year. I have wondered if I have added to much of the lime. Can't believe it would be the manure. Last year at this time my gourds had climbed up the trellis and onto the tree branch. It was so cool. This year I planted 3 different types and only two plants emerged from all the seeds and these two are totally stunted. I swear they are about 6 inches tall and have not grown in two weeks. Same thing with the cucumbers.
It is hot here too! Really hot. I think everything is having a hard time. Do you save your broccoli seed? I really like your trellis for your squash. Did you make it?
Sitting outside with the firepit going even though it is 88 degrees out, I LOVE the smell and the crackling of a fire. Although the bugs are about to drive me crazy! Not much going on here, thought fall was here but mother nature had another idea.
patricia jean hartman Well my dogs got a wonderful welcome from all.
Thank you for all the nice comments. I guess it's me and my i.v. pole planting bulbs. in a.m.
