Lanier, you responded to my question about wintering basil. There are tons of baby basil everywhere around it. If I just let it die and trim it back, will it seed itself and come out in the Spring? if not, can I preserve seeds? this is the first year i've been able to get any herbs to grow so i'm heartbroken that it won't overwinter.

Lanier thank you! Loved that you mentioned Williamsburg. We visit there a lot & I just love their gardens!

Thanks for your interest Lanier, no corn gluten meal is the seed germination suppressant that keeps weeds from growing. What you want for fungal diseases is horticultural or whole ground cornmeal. See my other blog:

I forgot to address your comment regarding the endless summer hydrangea. I think this is the 5th growing season. I have three of them. There are two pictured side by side - one I bought the second (which is almost the same size ) was started by rooting a branch. I had to transplant them after the lst year because they were getting too much sun. We had a very wet spring, this is the best they have bloomed.

Hi Lanier,
Thanks for joining garden arrangements. I have been having problems with loading pictures today. I could not get them to load on the group website they keep going to my personal page. Today I joined pets in the garden and I could not get my pictures to load. Love your scottie pictures and planters.
Glad you started a discussion, unfortunately I no nothing about dried arrangements. I have taken several classes on fresh flower arranging. Hopefully this group will "grow" and we will get some more expertise. I love seeing the variety of pictures and info on the gardener's index.

Thank you so much for commenting. I was so excited to see that this morning. You are right...I need to take it a little bit at a time and I think that is what happened I just saw plants I liked and planted planted planted and when they didn't do well in the Texas heat I got discourged. I'm finishing up the school year and look forward to starting over and sharing with new friends. Again thank you so much.

Thanks, I need all the prayers I can get. It isn't something serious but if it continues to fester in my dh it will get worst. He is the kindest person; but bottles things up. He is overworked and exhausted. He has worked hard all his life. He drives a rig. The thing is I'm getting tired too of the tired man. But I love him.

HI Lanier,
My goodness, you have been working hard. MY spring garden is still in flower here in Grand Island New York. The birds ate my giant pumpkin seeds and today I was busy planting more which I have germinated inside in my littel conservatory. I was also busy planting out my baskets. THe Impatiens are spreading and the Azaleas and Rhodies are opening. I should send you some pictures.
You really have a nice garden there. I know how tough it is to garden in Texas. I had a small one when we lived in College Station on sebatical. It is like a rainforest here right now.
Love
Julie

I don't think I got notice of your comment...noticed it as I added a few more pics of the giant orange cosmos flowers we had last year. Maybe I should visit my own page more often! We have this huge long pile of hard clay soil in our yard. Hubby hand-dug it out of the area where we now grow tomatoes and peppers. We call it the "Indian Burial Ground". I decided to just throw out some saved flower seeds, hoping they would one day grow and camoflauge the nasty pile of dirt. Boy did it ever! This year we have literally thousands of cosmos seedlings coming up in various parts of the yard. They are beautiful and require no water or feeding. But it has been a challenge to keep them out of the corn garden.

No chemo or radiation. I was one of the lucky ones they caught way early. Surgery got all of it with no possibility it spread. Mom & Grandma died of breast cancer and both went the full rounds with chemo and radiation. I was aware of chemo brain, but that's not the case with me. Brain interprets trauma and goes into a brain storm sometimes. That's why severe trauma often results in memory loss of the event and shortly after. 15 hours of surgery aparently got interpreted as severe trauma by my brain. I'm missing six weeks and having significant problems with short term memory. I say significant, I'm still in the "normal" range. But all who know me well see it as a significant loss. I have one of those encyclopedic memories. It's hard to get used to needing calendars, address books, alarm clocks that tell me what they're going off for etc. The test on Monday revealed I'm a genius at language skills and a near idiot at mechanical ones (no surprise). The doctor said if this is an example of my brain damaged he'd have been priviledged to test me prior to surgery. I wondered, he kept seeming surprised.

Thanks, I'm a bit "bouncy" so Tigger seemed appropriate. Had an eval yesterday to determine if I'm getting Alzheimers. I'm not, just having trouble getting my brain totally back from a 15 hour surgery in December. Anyway, the doc who evaluated me said it's possible I'm bi-polar because I'm way too positive for all the junk I'm going through. Nope, just one of those people that personifies the saying "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". Or my daughter says "You're the freaking Energizer Bunny!"

Hope you've had fun at the herb festival. I'd love to go but already had other plans with the dh--dear hubby. If you finish at the herb festival early you could check out the butterfly plant sale at the Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park (over in Dallas).

Oh, and I forgot to say that it took about 9 months for the 3 lemons to mature. That's a long time!

These everbearing strawberries are great though, and they came back this year so I expect more treats for the summer and fall.

I was in Houston a couple weeks ago, working on Hurricane Ike restoration for a week. It was my first time in Texas.

I don't think my Meyer lemon is as successful as most people have experience. It bloomed but didn't fruit the first year, didn't bloom at all the second year. The third year it bloomed and I hand pollinated it with a little paint brush. That's when I got the 3 lemons. This year it got lots of blooms & i faithfully pollinated them, but only one lemon is developing. However, now another batch of blooms is forming so I guess I get another chance, which is encouraging.

I love the tree; it has a beautiful shape and the foliage is so green and lush, unlike most native species here. It adds elegance to my dining room through the cold season.

Was the breakage caused the temperature change or the wind just caught the class? Yow!
I've got every plant bought so far in the ground and will go to an herb festival on Saturday to buy more!

Well they are burning because my glass garden table exploded into a thousand pieces in the wind and I was pretty hit cleaning it all up. I had to order more pumpkin seeds as the birds ate the last germinating seedlings. I have all the baskets done and the tomatos are in.

Thanks Lanier,
I was out starting my veggies and annuals in a 40 mile wind this afternoon. We have a very short season so I have to work fast to change the spring garden to the summer one.

Well I have several sources of water, 3 bird baths and our waterfall in our pond. Never had this problem before. I have always had hummers. Just wondering if the winter weather we had messed them up. Oh well maybe next year.
