I have a question, none of my tomatoes are turning red. Is it due to the sun? My husband is complaining here! He just sees the green and whines! I know that they will turn red as soon as we leave for vacation. That will be in about 2 weeks. That wil…

I finally went into my garden today, I am somewhat afraid of it! It has gotten out of hand. I am waiting for little garden gnomes to start talking and moving about in there! One day the plants were little, then they were growing nicely, then they be…

Kay, how much rain have you gotten this season? I am just wondering if your yellow squash have gotten too much too fast? Just a thought.

Hello all, I have a question about my tomatoes. The plants are HUGE! They are about 4 ft tall right now if now taller! My mother came by tonight and made a suggestion about trimming the tops before they start producing. Has anyone done this? They ar…

Hi everyone, I just "harvested" my first "crop" of parsley today. A huge freezer bag of it! I haven't rinsed it for fear that will damage it in the refridge. Can someone help here? Can I rinse it and then how long will it stay in there? Can I freeze…

I was just out in my vegetable garden and noticed these tiny little spiders (I tried to take pics, but they are too small) and they are climbing up the trellis stings of my green bean trellis. They have made this line of what seems eggs. I have neve…

My garden is doing so well! I have 3 little baby tomatoes, and tons of blossoms! I am sure everyong else does too, but I am so excited. Of course, I am so afraid that my veggies will come in right as we go on vacation, at the end of July! Does anyone know how long it takes for green beans? This is truly the first time that I have done them. They are the climbing ones, so I haven't a clue. All I know is that they look great and are growing at a high rate of speed.

I really lucked out!

With all of these terrible storms, I have been really lucky. I have had a few small branches, but that was it. Some of my neighbors had some big branches. My little garden just loved the rain instead. I have been really lucky considering looking at all of the pictures I am seeing.

Kristen, I had to split my comment into two parts, because it wouldn't send the whole thing. This piece should follow the piece below about crab spiders! Sorry!
Please don't use any poisons (pesticides, herbicides) in your garden. These will kill the beneficial bugs, too!!! Often a spray of a solution of an environmentally friendly dishwashing liquid (e.g. Simple Green, Shacklees) mixed with water - about 1 tsp to a quart of water - will do the trick. You have to be assiduous and apply it regularly (once a day, at least, but don't go overboard!) and don't expect immediate results. Good luck! There are many other organic tricks you can use. Go to www.organicgardening.com for lots of useful info!

Crab spiders eat harmful and destructive insects. Lacewings, praying mantis and ladybirds/bugs do the same thing. You can probably get those three at your garden shop. Let the ladybirds out about an hour before dusk so they snuggle down and stay in your garden, otherwise they might fly to your neighbour's garden and help there!!!! There's a plastic card called 'Mac's Field Guide,' which has beneficial critters on one side and bad on the other. Ask your garden shop to order if for you, if they haven't already got it. Otherwise you could try online. The card has pictures of the creatures and their babies. It also tells you where you'll find them and what they eat! Unfortunately it doesn't tell you how get rid of the bad ones, but you can often find that info online.

Hi Kristen, I can't believe how much your veggie garden looks like mine...but yours is a bit larger. I have my peas and beans growning on PVC just like yours only I put chicken wire on mine instead of strings. The wire last longer and is much stronger for when my dogs pick their own meals right off the plants. I have lettuse, peppers, radishes, assorted salad greens, tomatoes, corn, fennel, broc. and brussel sprouts in this garden and I use my neighbors garden for cucumbers, squash(asst.) more tomatoes, peppers, lovage, herbs, and my apple mint. I plant enough for them to be able to harvest anything they want for the use of their garden. He is 80+ and she is not able to even come outside anymore. I try to pick enough of my peas and lettuce for them also when I pick for my husband and myself. Anytime there is toooo much for us then I offer it to all the other neighbors or take it to the senior center. I also have a strawberry patch that everyone is enjoying right now. Happy Gardening.

Hi Kristen, I just noticed your message today. Parts of Texas are very dry and brown. Some areas around the DFW area are too (we live in Denton, just north of Dallas/Ft Worth), but our gardens are planted at the end of the runoff we get from occasional storms. (Also our neighbor really over waters his garden and it seeps into ours.) As it turns out, we rarely have to water our tomato and pepper garden - it retains enough water to sustain itself. Unfortunately, we had a bad storm last week that destroyed about half of our corn. Got almost 3 inches of rain, but combined with 70 mph winds. We have been trying to recover, but it is a daunting task. Thanks for your message!

Hi! I just looked at your slide-show, and your pictures are great; keep-em coming. I LOVE your "babies". I used to have Rotties.
I found a link for raised beds. The company is in New Zealand, and would you believe that the boxes cost less than the shipping?

Hi Kristen.
The Iris last a few weeks, but you can put other flowers around the mailbox with them. Day-lilies bloom after the Iris, and last for a while also.
Thanks for the compliments! The gardens are DEFINITELY a work in progress. LOL
