The cheapest way is to dig down 4" and put the soil somewhere, hopefully close by. Then put barrier cloth over the area. If a border is needed steel header works great where we are in Washington and I would image elsewhere.. This can be purchased fo…

here's what we're trying this year :)

Kathy, The Autumn Clematis at Lowe's said part shade but when I went to a regular garden center, their's said full sun. Even though it costs twice as much I purchased the garden center one. Thanks for your help.

Mary Ann, I have several climbers on trellises. Be sure to make the trellis large. Each trellis is about 7 feed tall and 8 feet wide and supports 2 rose bushes. My husband and I built these. These were very easy to build.

Thanks for the comments. These roses got hit by black spot & fire blight last year. I cut them way back this year thinking if I lost them, I'd have to get something else. So far they seem to be coming back pretty good but they look nothing like the…

This rose screen is gorgeous!

Good Morning, I have an old tree trunk in full sun where I'd like to grow a vine that would bloom most of the summer. Anyone have any good ideas? I really wanted a Sweet Autumn Clematis but it looks like they need part sun.
May 23
Kevin, Hit the clematis with a stream of water from your hose. This should knock both bugs off. The lady bugs will be fine but the aphids are too "dumb" to find their way back to the plant. I'd try that before I tried anything else.

Linda, I've seen small 3-sided sheds that you could build onto the side of your house. They look pretty easy to build and they look like they'd be just the size you need.
April 24
Anne, You should try these. All I do is fertilize with Bayer's systemic rose fertilizer. They've been quite easy to grow.

Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is a trick to growing Basil? I planted some in a container (by itself) in full sun and it died within a couple of weeks. Any idea of what I did wrong?

Hi Kittie, Do you mulch your beds? Mulching really helps mine. I do very little weeding.
April 20
I used flat rocks found out in the woods - I cut down 3" into our lawn, layed down a layer of mulch put rocks on top and filled in between with more mulch - in some spots i removed the mulch, some of the smaller rocks and places lemon tyme to fill i…

Basil is very easy to grow from seed. EASY!!! I don't know if you purchased a plant or started it from seed. Could be it was too moist or bugs ate it??? Anyway-Purchase a pack of seeds. Sow it in some small pots. Put in the sun. When plants get an inch or so high you can pull them apart and repot them. After a week or so plant them in the ground, a flowerpot or give them away to friends! Hope this was a little bit of help!

Oh Kay,! I love your pics ! ! The Rose of Sharon is grown here in FL, but they call it "Althea". I miss the Ohio weather in the summer. I know it gets hot, but not like here . I cannot tolerate the humid heat much, so I am looking forward to making boxes and growing things easier.

Hey Kay, haha that rhymed.

Thank you for the tip on using epsom salt. I am going to try it on my climber! Also Good idea about using the rocks with mulch on top. That might give my vine a little more support then just the mulch I am using now.

Kay, what does the epsom salt do for roses? I planted my first climber this spring. Will that help it produce more blooms?

Diane, sorry for not making my message more clear - my reminder was about those shrubs that need to be scaled down and in my region (zones 5 & 6) the buds for the next season form on new growth in August so cutting the brunches after July would have…

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
