Does anyone know of a better than average website for identifying plants/flowers/invasive plants? I moved to a new place last year and am constantly finding new plants/flowers, just don't know what they are.

Good morning Julie - thanks for the tips!

Remember that potatoes are the unique vegetable here. While keeping them in a rotation plan, you'll want to be sure they're planted in a bed that has not previously grown tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant. And you are right about not planting tomatoes…

What kind of gardening do you like to do?
I want to learn more - I'm a one person team with no neighbors to bounce ideas off of. Believe that just because I'm in the city doesn't mean that we can't garden. Trying to be the change I want to see in others. Organic is my style - no chemicals preferred.
How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden?
Depends - would like to spend more (average 2-5)

My first time - putting in my own vegetable garden

Well after 7 years of dreaming of a home that would have space for a vegetable garden, I finally have one.

Here is the menu:
1-beef steak tomato
1-grape tomato
5-kennebeck potatoes - to anyone not familiar with the variety - A MUST TRY. I eat them like apples and they make the BEST mashed potatoes.
4-jalapeno peppers
4-peppers (carnival mix)
9-white sweet onions

I read somewhere to keep the tomatoes and the potatoes away from each other, they are at the further away from each other, everything… Continue

Today

Started out today by heading to the museum because one, I've been wanting to get there for ages and two the weather forecast predicted rain all day. Well, Pittsburgh was overcast and threatening rain most of the early afternoon - but by 4ish the sun came out and was beautiful.

So I grabbed my boots and headed to the garden. I got a large bunch of Lilies moved from the top tier down to the second tier after running the Mantis in several areas to work up the more clay soil on the 2nd level. I fea… Continue

Photo reflections

Wow what a wonderful thing to put the 2008 pictures on then see the ones I just took this evening - feels good to see the progress that is happening. Since doing this on my own, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming.

I made the decision a few weeks ago to rip out the landscaping cloth that was snarling my attempts to dig and replant - hopefully I won't be sorry I did this.

I've dug out at least 10 ground junipers and thought I found them all - but I came across another one hidden beneath th… Continue

The Journey Begins

We purchased this home in April of 2008.

Charming place but it was not taken care of in quite sometime.

The front yard is my pet project - when I have the hours (and energy) to spend. Last year was the year to explore and see what popped up. I found a shovel and a landscaping fork under the over growth. I cleared a small part of the top tier to put in a few vegetables last year - the tomato plant gave us a bumper crop into mid october!

My plan is to have half of the top tier (closest to the h… Continue

About the papers. I usually wet them and place them in my garden before I plant. It helps keep the weeds from growing and also good because I dont use chemicals to kill the weeds. I usually cover it with mulch but I had run out of time before we left the other day. As for my robin...He is back, has built a nest in the pine tree at the back of our yard and she(sho I rescued two weeks ago from the neighbors cat)is sitting on the nest. Baby soon. I will have to keep a watch on the babies because we have two dogs and the cat is trying to live under the pine tree. I am going to be making a cover for my strawberry patch this week and a rain barrel before the rain goes away. haha.

Karen, I thought you might get a laugh out of this. It was windy in Liberty Boro today so we went flower shopping. Yesterday I covered several sections of my garden with wet news paper to kill off some wild for-get-me-nots and a few weeds. I was going to put mulch over it for the day but told my husband it should be fine until I get home. Then I can plant and cover it with mulch when we get back. HAHA As we drove up the main street past the Boro building I noticed a piece of newspaper floating through the air and across the street coming to rest at the police entrance to the building. OMG...I said "I bet that is my paper from the garden"...my husband said "Can't be". As we turned the corner 2 blocks from our house, YES, 3 more sheets of paper drifting over house tops and down the street. When we turned into the driveway, the fence around the back yard was covered with newspaper. A trail from the garden, to the neighbors, to the police station. I quickly gathered up 1 1/2 hours of work from yesterday and shoved it into my shed. Do you think the people in the neighborhood think I am crazy...YES, they watched me running around like a crazy person picking up paper, Now who does that??? ME. Needless to say, I will be redoing all the newspaper and it will be covered with mulch as I put down each piece. Laught is the best medicine. Welcome to my world.

Karen, I use to spend my earlier days in the Library in SH. We go to Pamela's for there "low cal." breakfast...haha. I use to live in North Braddock, and Braddock before moving to Liberty Boro. Spend most of my time in the gardens and doing scrapbooking. Love this site also...very nice people to talk to and discuss things with others who love the same things as me. Keep blogging and Happy Gardening. Janice

Oh yes, I know where that is! There are some really nice homes in that area. I really love this site, I just found it several days ago and there is so much info and it seems to be growing more and more. When I joined there were only about 100 or so people, now there are over a couple thousand! Whew! Enjoy yourself on here as I have, and keep in touch! Happy gardening, karen
