You need to put them in the ground. You also need to place them where wind will not hit them strongly. A south facing area is best. If you have an "inside corner" on the south side of your home, that would be ideal for them.

It's so odd listening to someone in Texas talk about a tree that grows on an island in Washington state by the B.C. Canada border. There are some "huge" fig trees here. I'm not sure if people realize how big they can get. I see them mostly planted o…

Sheryl, do you have your tomatoes in the ground already? i had to replant 3 times last year, i'm afraid to put them in the ground for fear of late frost. anyone know which of the green house kits is best? i want a decent green house for next year.

I bought 2 Brown Turkey figs.  the tag says they are viable down to 0 degree F.  Will these figs produce fruit if I put them in the ground or should I keep them in large pots?  I am 90 miles north of Dallas, USDA zone 7a (I think).  Thanks!

what is the best garden supply place to get things like floating row covers that are good quality for a reasonable price? i also want to buy some berry plants for fall planting. internet shopping can be dicey, so I wanted tried & true companies.

I don't know about cilantro but I pinched off the spindly part of my mint and it is doing very well. Be VERY careful. It will take over your garden if it gets going.

has anyone tried trellis netting? I want to use it for my tomatos, cucumbers, squash, melons, ect. next year, as they are an unholy, vines-everywhere mess this year. the cucumbers & watermelons have grown into such a heap I don't know how I'll wade…

I've had the same problem-some bitter, some edible. I don't think its because they are pickling varieties, because my canning cookbook says not to pickle bitter ones. So...I don't have an answer, but don't think its just a variety issue. Maybe our s…

one thing I advise you not to buy into-those upside-down planting containers. I bought 2, the plants I put in them were pathetic & constantly bone dry, no matter how much I watered them. I finally gave up. A complete waste of $20. Tomatos in the gar…

Sustainable gardening

I am trying to "live off the land," so to speak, for the physical and fiscal health of my family. What you buy in the grocery store doesn't look or taste good, isn't that great for you and costs too much. The "tire garden" was an expirement. I wanted beds, these were free and I like that I am reusing something that would otherwise be an addition to our waste problem. It isn't as pretty as a box bed, but its off by itself behind a fence and not directly visible. So far it seems to be working really well, though I've had problems keeping fire ants out of the beds. I was huge pregnant when I put the garden together this Spring so I didn't get everything I wanted done, next year I want heavy mulching in between each row to keep down weeds and a few more tire rows to try corn and sunflowers on the north side. I've been totally organic this year and it seems to be working out really well for me, except i'm starting to have some pest problems. The garden consists of watermelon, canteloupe, cucumbers, several varieties of squash, carrots, turnips, Romaine lettuce, radishes, lots of different peppers and tomatos, dill, cilantro, German thyme, sweet basil and lavender. I welcome any and all advice on sustenance gardening! There is also a small bed near the house with beans, cauliflour, broccoli, spinach, more Romaine, onions and strawberries (it wraps around an unused pump-house). I have big plans for lots of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries next year, too!

Jaime, for your pest problems you might want to check out www.thedirtdoctor.com
He's located in Texas and is all about organics. I have a group here called Funk & Flash From Junk & Trash and I do have a discussion going about using old tires, you might want to check that out. Also, a very wonderful discussion called 'Vertical Gardening-Hitting the Recycling Mother Lode in the garden. Also, in my friends list in a man named Kim Thomas, he's in Sherman, Texas, you should make friends with him also. He's a graduate of Texas A&M in AG and is very helpful and resourceful, and a wonderful person too! Also, go on line and check out Ruth Stout's gardening methods. She was a big mulcher and mulch is so important. What your doing is wonderful!
Cheers!

I can't remember if I answered about the basil seed in the winter. If you still have any (now probably frozen) woody basil plants that blossomed and went to seed, try pulling them up and putting the top in a large paper bag. If there is any seed, it should fall off into the bottom of the bag as it dries and you can try putting it out in late March or early April. Basil usually grows very quickly from seed when it's warm enough. That being said, this past spring was very weird for growing basil with the warm and cold spells.

I guess I should have asked if your older, woody basil has blossomed. It sets seed very easily and while the baby seedlings coming up now may freeze, there will probably be some dormant ones that will come up in the spring. Why don't you try to transplant a few of the basil seedlings in a pot in the winter near the sunniest window and then see what comes up in the spring. If nothing comes up, seeds are very readily available and most any nursery and it's one that grows very easily and quickly from see. Today, I heard another thing you can do to have basil in the house in the winter: Cut some basil and just place it in water ... and it will root pretty easily in just water in a sunny windowsill. When it starts getting leggy and bad lucking, trim it again and put the cuttings back in the window and this way you could theoretically have basil all winter. Good luck!

I understand. I love camping up at Bonham State Park. They have the loveliest wildflowers in late March/early April. They even have Big Bend Bluebonnets on one of the trails. Huge, like head high, bluebonnets. Awe inspiring!
