Very pretty.

Thanks Joan, I always trim my mums and phlox until the 4th of July and then let them go. My Phlox have huge blooms but the mums are smaller. I will try your idea of extending the bloom period by doing some but not all.

I have several patches of Shasta Daisys around my garden and only have one problem. How to keep them from falling over! I have staked and fenced but with a wind storm which we have frequently they always fall. Can you keep them shorter by trimming u…

How about an old white iron or brass bed? I have also seen old iron cribs used, I just bought an old iron childs bed without the rails, have not decided how to use it yet but the planter box sounds good.

Sorry I misspoke if what you say is correct then my hydrangeas must be in the alkaline areas of my garden but several are under a Doug fir and are pink. I always assumed that where pines grow the soil is acidic. I am now officially confused. ha ha ha

Just a thought about my hydrangeas, the pink one is almost 45 yrs old and I never fertilize any of them. I live on 2 acres of very acidic soil so I get a lot of pinks even the blue ones planted in the ground turn lavender, The blue one in the photo…

I don't really know how to add a comment with the picture but the peegee tree is first and the mini is last. I have had the mini for 5 years and that is as tall as it gets so it's great for the front of a border or along a path.

Diane's blog

Well the signs of spring are here, I went to the first garden show in the Willamette valley of Oregon and it is one of my favorite. The Good Earth Show. I found a Peony I have been looking for, a bush type called Memorial Day, a double bright true red, it's an American heirloom variety grown in pioneer days and often used to decorate Civil War graves. I also found a disturbing practice where some bulb growers were selling (at a high price) tulip, daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs that s… Continue

FALL CLEAN UP!!

Well the leaves are falling so I have a question for all avid gardeners, do you clean up the beds in the fall or wait until spring? Perhaps like me you are selective in what you prune now and what you leave for winter interest. Do you remove dead vegetables and plant a cover crop or do you just leave it over winter and till it in in the spring? I have seen it done both ways so I don't think your garden cares much. I cut down most perennials in the fall, prune some shrubs, clean up all my lillies… Continue

Fall begins on Tuesday

I am already in full fall mode because if I wait I would never get everything done. I am at the trimming/pruning stage now and I actually enjoy the process. I usually prune all of my bushes by one third or more depending on what it is and when it blooms. My roses get dead headed unless they produce nice rose hips, then I leave them alone. Some perennials get cut down now, giving them a chance to produce a nice low carpet of green (shasta daisys etc), some are left until the first frost kills the… Continue

End of Season?

Well today it's over 100 outside and no AC so what have I been doing all day, I've been canning !!! Pickled Beets, Pickled Red Cabbage and pickles. My house of course smells like vinegar and it's hot. I really have no choice on when to can and I no longer do very large batches, just enough for myself and to make up a few baskets for gifts. So far I have frozen or canned four different jams, beans, corn, basil, salsa, pasta sauce, and pie fillings. I have canned all my life and even though I am al… Continue

Garden Photos

Well today will be a busy one, I have a freelance photographer coming out this evening to take photos of my gardens. A friend called to ask me if this photographer could take some shots for an article she is writing on mid summer gardens. I try to always have color in my gardens and right now the glads, phlox, penstemon and echinacea are doing well and all of my hostas are in full bloom. The roses are almost ready to pop with their third big bloom so if she tries not to shot a few weeds it shoul… Continue

Congratulations on the tomato. We've had a few yellow cherry tomatoes that have been quite tasty but probably less than 10 total. I am happy to say that we have a lot of fruit growing on almost all the plants and flowers on all of them so I'm hoping we'll have a good crop in spite of the late start. I also have some very small fruit on my cucs so I'm crossing my fingers. My squash is still very small and not producing fruit yet so I don't have hope for much there. I noticed when we visited you the other day that you have a huge pumpkin coming along nicely. Good luck with the jungle!!

Decided not to comment in Gardeners Lounge because you made this particular comment hours ago and lots of stuff has been posted since but...
"I can't believe I didn't realize pots were on sale at Jerry's. I've been in there a couple of times this week. Did this sale include the terra cotta pots?

Thanks for accepting my friendship and the comment about my containers! My son built all the wooden containers. He used leftover fence boards and 2x4's from a fence project.

Big hugs, I am sorry that you have had to bear the burden alone. But, with his spirit with you and the power of great surgeons, time will heal.

Hi Diane...how are you holding up under all this rain?? I guess the upside is we haven't had to irrigate.
Saturday would have been a great day for me to get outside to work in the yard; however, being a huge NE Highlander baseball fan (my son is an alumni) I went to the State Tournament instead.

Oh, Harry...I understand completely. We had some of our tomatoes last night with dinner. Home grown...they are just so much sweeter than hot house ones from the store. One of my plants is a sauce tomato, and if it doesn't get going...well, green mar…
