Hi everyone, I noticed your discussion here and have some info to share on Straw Bale gardening... My soil here is horrible, since I'm renting I'm not going to invest in any expensive and long-term soil enhancements. The place I got my info from on…

Cool ha? Hey this site does not let you add attachments. So the pictures I sent to my email won't work. Frustrating.

I've been doing some "searches" on the internet for "wheat straw bale" gardening. And I came across this blog and I want to share it because it has some great pics and he talks about his experience. I too needed to see some pictures. http://www.outd

Not having luck with the pictures so if you can get on to see, I recommend seeing all the cool different outcomes and planting ideas. They found that it helps a lot if they border the bale with wood or something to help hold them together as they br…

From what I see that is what most of the people used, if not that, then sodium Nitrate, just initially while you cook your bale and check the temp for proper planting. I guess it breaks it down with the watering quickly. 10 days or so, if I remember…

Hi Dawn, I took a look at the links you provided regarding the hay straw bale gardening. This is very interesting! Did you use the wheat straw bale? And I'm a little confused on treating the bales. If I use the wheat straw will I need treat it with…

Here are some comments I saw on the site: Russ my bales are still producing very well even though most of the tomatoes in the dirt of mine and my neighbors have just about dried up. It has been about six weeks since we had any rain but I picked a co…

I will look to see more on it, to answer some of your questions, but I know some do it because they have a tough time, bending and gardening down low, some do it because they like the creative aspect, plants growing vertically and horizontally, up o…

Days 1–3: Water the bales thoroughly and keep them wet. Days 4–6: Sprinkle the bales with 1/2 cup of ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) per bale per day, and water it well into the bales. I didn’t have any trouble finding ammonium nitrate from my local ag-su…

There is a process, it involves hay bales, preferably ones with less seed. You put Sodium Nitrate or other type high nitrogen fertilizer on the bales and water with a drip hose for 10 days straight approx. checking the temperature inside during this…

Is heat an issue? Maybe that was it, because we get 2 to 3 months of 100 -115 degrees here. I sure like them though.

Hay bale gardening

Anyone here into straw gardening. I keep saying I am going to do it but have not yet. I would really like to start at least one to 4 hay bales this year.

I have done several lasagna gardens now, but not planting into the bale itself.

I would love to see pictures of yours if you have them.

I need more evergreens and berries

I really think that living in the desert is so dank and depressing in the winter, when everything is dormant. I had a different house in the desert and had a lot more evergreens and in the winter there was always something to look at, now, it gives me ideas of what my project is going to be for this year, in part.

Do you guys plan out your spring through early fall routine, a year in advance, like I do?

Dawn, I'm a collector of succulents in central OK. For my outside beds, I make sure they are raised, have lots of sharp grave, and lots of organic matter and perlite. I topdress them with stones. My potting mix is mostly homemade comost, perlite and sharp gravel (general (or all) purpose gravel from Lowes, right next to the dry concrete). My non-hardys are in pots, many of them are planted, pot deep in terraced beds; you get much more growth with the pots sunk in the earth. I now have 500 in my greenhouse.

Dawn, take a look a my CA site, it is smaller and easier to poke around. I have been away from the garden for a wk one more wk to go. Thankfully the weather is beginning to cool down. I have a gardener 10 hrs a wk, which is just ok and I think the sprinklers are working, but I miss my "babies". Oh, I added Gardens Around the World for us travelers.

This is the first year for our Candy Corn Vine out by my Mail box. Do any of you have any hints as to what to do with it over the winter. We are in level 5, is it best to bring it in over the winter or just to mulch it really well?
