Pretty Carolyn. This would inspire me to get one of those riding mowers. As it is, we're too hilly here and the lawn gets to be less and less (more garden borders)...but there is something very appealing about this look!

I've got flowers every day of the year if you count the Corsican Violet, Viola corsica. In Denver it starts to bloom again about Thanksgiving and will keep it's flowers on under the snow. When it thaws, which it does after almost every snow here (ex…

According to my 2007 journal, by 28 February that year I had Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis), Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), and Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis) in full bloom. In 2006 the Winter Aconite was up by mid-January! Now, we've had s…

I guess I and my partner are too optimistic. We had a warm spell last weekend in Charlotte, NC. I planted my leaf lettuce, spinach, and arugula seeds, but he planted cabbage and cauliflower seedlings, much to my advisement not. However, as you can s…

I do the same thing.....every year!!! And love going through catalogs and planning or redesigning, drawing out a garden plan. although when the time finally comes, never seem to have the cash on hand to get everything I want!!! I end up doing alot o…

I can't resist a seed rack, either. I don't have the space for indoor seed starting so everything I buy goes right in the ground.

Whoa divine timing. It's raining to day just after I planted my seeds and seedlings. A flash and rumble. This usually means Spring is on its way. HURRAY!!!

I too have fallen into the trap of longing for spring by buying items to grow. Today I found myself buying caladiums and strawberries as well as a stockpile of tomato, pepper, and various other seeds. I now have to really ride myself to get everythi…

My Garden

My yard and garden are very small (7500 sq ft). I have about 10 rose bushes stuck here and there among all sorts of perennials. I like to "try" varieties to see which ones are successful and add more of those as the seasons go by. The resulting garden is quite a hodge podge!

Gardening Notebook 25 February 2010

According to my 2007 journal, by 28 February that year I had Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis), Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), and Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis) in full bloom. In 2006 the Winter Aconite was up by mid-January! Now, we've had several days of thaw this week, so I'm hoping I'll see some blooms poke their heads up within a few days! I'm always giddy with excitement to see the first blooms of the season. That's why I planted these particular species, because they tend to come u… Continue

Gardening Notebook 21 Feb 2010

I went to Home Depot yesterday for some hardware items and I ended up buying 20 packets of flower and herb seeds and a bag of Ranunculus bulbs. It's really silly for me to buy seeds because I never work hard enough at starting them for them to be of any use. But this time of year it's so hard to resist the temptation to prepare for spring planting! I always think, if I don't get around to starting the seeds indoors, I'll at least put them in the ground in May and hope they do ok.Continue

You're way overdue for a ribbon! Also, with all those roses you must have a very large rose garden...how about showing it to us with a picture?

Diane, sorry for not making my message more clear - my reminder was about those shrubs that need to be scaled down and in my region (zones 5 & 6) the buds for the next season form on new growth in August so cutting the brunches after July would have…

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
