New But Not

I have more or less played with gardening in the past but we had to move around some so I got out of it.
I now have a permanent place and it's Zoned 8a. Our summers can be stifling hot and very Humid at times, mainly through July and August. I like all types of Flowers and so does my wife. I have an area now i'm slowly filling.

I have never done dahlias before, and I need hand holding. I saw some on HGTV that were not dinnerplates and were on tall stalks. They were red red red and gorgeous... Any suggestions?

I was inspired by some pictures of dahlia that was posted yesterday. Never had one before, bought some tubers today (they were on sale). Sure I'm one lucky gardener if they bloom this year... we'll see :=)

I'm an avid dahlia gardener with very little success. I've planted for years and have had some luck but I've had so many challenges from grubs, spider mites, deer, shade, japanese beetles, etc. I keep trying!

New Bulbs

Hi,
Got my final round of New yesterday. Bulbs, that i put in a planter and covered with miracle-gro soil. Hopefully we won't have too much rain this winter so they won't rot. Especially my Queen of the Night Tulips. It's a shame I have to wait til spring to see what I just bought and planted. My rose that i saved from near death has 2 new blooms on it suprizingly. I though it was done blooming til next year.
Well, a short blog this time cos that's all I got going on.

New Perennials

Hi Again,
I finally got my new plants in and now the cool weather comes. I hope they have time to get rooted good before it gets too cold. But they say to plant in the fall so i guess i'm ok. I have plants in my original garden spot and planted an all Red garden just opposite it in the other corner of my front yard. Tricky part here is that the Red garden ground was un-prepared. It was kind of a last minute deal, so basically it's just planted among the grass. What i'll probably do is wait til t… Continue

Long Month..lol

Hi,
I'm still here!...lol I haven't blogged in a month but my last one said i'd probably wait til the nurseries sent my plants. Well, they sent them, now i got to get them. UPS somehow got the wrong address and put them back on the truck and told me they will deliver tomorrow. Just as well since it's raining and i couldn't get them planted anyway. Here's what i've got coming:

1 DROPMORE ITALIAN BUGLOSS

1 ARIZONA SUN GAILLARDIA

1 PINK MIST SCABIOSA

1 DOUBLE DECKER CONEFLOWER

Garden Finished

Hi All,
Just a short blog this week.
I finally finished my Garden spot and now have to wait for the nurseries to send my plants and bulbs in about another month. Wish I could get em sent early so I could start planting them. I'll try to be patient....lol. Anyhow, other than transplanting a rose that's all i've done this week. I do plan on moving 3 more roses to a front yard spot where i've got 2 now.
Well I said i'd be short, so have a good weekend.

Catch Ya next time.

Here I Am Again!

Hi,
I'm Back! I decided a weekly blog was too much, There are times when there's just nothing going on. But i'm back this week to blog, (I'm at the site everyday though at one time or another). Well, we made it to September and the temps are about 10 degrees cooler than a month ago middle 80's . I'm waiting for it to go down another 10 degrees for my taste (70's). But I did manage to get more of my Garden done and am near finished with it, until the New plants start arriving from the nurseries i… Continue

i know when you plant in the mid to late summer all plants need loads of water.... I'm assuming this goes double in hot areas. We're having a hot streak here, too. it was only supposed to be 74F today, but the heat index made it about 90!!! it's a good thing it finally rained last night!!!! My plants were looking sickly, and I water EVERY DAY!!!!!

I didn't do anything special to plant any of those seeds. All I noticed was that, if I direct sowed them, they did way better than they did when I grew them indoors first. I get a little to happy with the detachable faucet attachment, LOL. The seeds were free, so don't worry if they all don't take off. I have more if you want. I know you only wanted the 'perennial geranium' seeds, which I didn't end up sending anyway, cuz I gave you the wrong name!!! So sorry! I feel so dumb!!!

the mallow musk is definitely a perennial. OMG, did you say they opened up already? WOW!!! If you're talking about plants from the seeds I sent you, that was FAST!!! I gave a smal Mallow Musk plant to my neighbor, who had no landscape, and transplanted my huge one. Well, I guess my big one didn't like the shock (even though I used root starter liguid, for transplanting) so now i'm down from 2 to nill. Oh well, I have seeds and will start to grow new ones for next year.

Hey!!!! I sent out those seeds on Tuesday. Have you received them yet? I sent a few 'extras'... Just some seeds that I think would grow great in your garden, since you're in the south. I know you said you wanted the perennial geranium.... which my MOM has. She gave me Mallow Musk last year and called it geranium... sorry about the mix-up!!!! I'll be going to her house tomorrow and will grab those seeds so I can send the real thing to you!!! '
Otherwise, what'd ya think? Are you going to plant any of those seeds? if not, just throw them out, or give them to a happy home, LOL. I hope I didn't make you mad!!!!!

oh, yeah.... i'll be getting a bunch of seeds from my various hibiscus plants late this summer. since you're in GA, they should last a really long time. i may also have Oleander seeds left over from a couple of months ago, which would do great in your area!!! also on the list: daylily (yellow stella d'oro, orange, white), yucca, snapdragon, delphinium, shasta daisy, cosmo, morning glory (if i can get 'em in time, LOL)... eh, the list goes on.

some of them haven't seeded yet, others have seeded already and spread, but are flowering again... so i'm ASSuming they'll have more seeds later. you're more than welcome to anything i have. i don't know about you, but i'm have this problem they call "lack'o'funds" and am happy any time i can find stuff for FREE!!!!!

We just ordered new Dahlias this year from Swan Island Dahlias in Canby, Oregon. Although they haven't started blooming yet we're still enjoying the beautiful catalog they publish. They can be reached at 1-800-410-6540 to order the catalog or www.dahlias.com. I'd recommend the catalog - it's better than the website.
