That must be an older copy Elaine. Currenty the USDA does not recommend canning pumpkin. They say its because it is too dense to guarantee temperature all the way through the jar, even in pressure canning. There are some places online that claim mak…

I make zuccini relish with the ones that get away from me. Lots of recipes for it online, sometimes called Christmas relish because it has red and green peppers in it.

I've always heard of making pesto when the basil is at its peak and then freezing it in ice cube trays. You are supposed to be able to then empty the cube of frozen basil into ziplock bags for use later. I tried it today. This better be good once it…

Mickalyn, it can take a while to get a feel for how many cukes fit in the jars. The crisp, unbrined cukes can get clunky in there and leave a lot of space that you don't see at first. Especially if you are using a funnel or pouring them in. I've fou…

I am gray. My mother had beautiful steel gray hair that I always admired. When the first gray showed up ( I was 30 and 8 month's pregnant, it was NOT a good day) I ran to the beautician and had it covered up. But my lifestyle doesn't allow much time…

Victoria, we are kindred spirits. I get more satisfaction from looking at the nice rows of pretty colored jars full with the fruits of my labors than I do from eating it. Looking at a harvest canned, frozen, dried and lined up waiting for me to use…

Leilani, I'd dehydrate them. Sundried tomatoes are wonderful and the Krims have such amazing flavor.

Researching canning can get overwhelming. I'd start with what do you have in your garden that you can't eat fast enough to keep up with the output, then look into the various ways to preserve that. My favorite resource is Rodale Press' book 'Stockin…

Karen, some of my favorite plants for areas like that are barberry bushes. They will thrive in lower light conditons but can also take sun. They have thorns on them which deters my enormous dog from getting too close and the foliage is spectacular.…

Kristi: I loved your memories! It is so rare to be able to visit those kinds of places now. It is the type of place my husband and I are trying to create on a much smaller scale of course. One of my favorite motivations for doing some new project ar…

That's Hoebuck beach Barbara on the Makah reservation. One of our favorite places to hike, fish and camp. The cabins (no TV, internet, wifi) are clean, cheap and usually the beach is this empty! This was shot at the estuary where the Sooess (pronoun…

Well, Barbara has covered where I live pretty well! I would add though that both Port Angeles and Sequim have some spectacular places to eat. A bit of a drive for Barbara but within reason for me as I'm a bit further east than she is. I wish my inte…

Deborah, are you leaving the foliage on after the blooms have spent to feed the rhizomes? Also, are you deadheading the blooms to make sure that they aren't setting seed. Just a few more things to try. I've never had that issue with mine so I'm just…

I LOVE italian food. I lived for many years in a sicilian neighborhood which may explain my aversion to chain italian food. Both my boys are chefs and work together at the italian restaurant featured in the Twilight books. My husband blames me for f…

I'm with you Jerry. The advantage to a chain is the food is the same whether you're in Philly, Boston or San Francisco. To me, if I wanted to eat what I ate at home, I'd stay home! I've made a few monumental road trips in my past and have developed…

when you can your tomatoes in jars, make sure you stick a wooden spoon in the jar and get all the bubbles out and mash the tomatoes down in the jar all the way. When I was starting out, I had a lot of juice in the jar with little tomato. But when you do it many times, it takes practice. Let me know how it works.

morning, On your question on your hosta. Hosta's sometimes have new growth that takes on the characteristics of the parent plants or a new plant of it's own [new variety]. Some people call this process reverting or sporting. I just keep taking out the part I don't want. I keep having the same problem every year, too. You cann't make big hostas by dividing them every year. A little frustrated!

Oh, Harry...I understand completely. We had some of our tomatoes last night with dinner. Home grown...they are just so much sweeter than hot house ones from the store. One of my plants is a sauce tomato, and if it doesn't get going...well, green mar…

Mel, moldy cash in the backyard? I wish it were true. Nope. Just use plastic cards for everything and settle up at the end of the month. BTW, it took me a couple of hours to get the old faucet off. the one big nut holding it to the countertop had c…
