Hello Carolyn, great website to visit but the problem is, I get jealous. I want my dream garden to be in my backyard. However, it's always good to look over the fence to see what your neighbor's up to (haha)

Hello Walt, For nine years I had to deal with 50 foot black walnut trees shading almost my entire backyard. Before I had them cut down, I attempted everything. Finally, I took that old garden saying to heart: "A weed is just a misplaced plant." I le…

OK, I know that it's fine to plant cold weather seeds this time of year like lettuce, spinach, and arugula, but cabbage and cauliflower seedlings? But necessity is the mother of invention so Target came to the rescue :-)

We in Charlotte had the same weather though we didn't wear shorts. We got a little too enthusiastic and in addition to planting seeds, planted cabbage and cauliflower seedlings. Hence the forthcoming rescue effort when temperatures dipped to 27 F.

I guess I and my partner are too optimistic. We had a warm spell last weekend in Charlotte, NC. I planted my leaf lettuce, spinach, and arugula seeds, but he planted cabbage and cauliflower seedlings, much to my advisement not. However, as you can s…

Whoa divine timing. It's raining to day just after I planted my seeds and seedlings. A flash and rumble. This usually means Spring is on its way. HURRAY!!!
February 22
Well, today it hit 60 degrees and I decided to plant my spinach, leaf lettuce, and arugula seeds. I'm also taking a chance on some store bought cabbage and cauliflower seedlings. Okay, I may be too optimistic but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained.

How many of you over buy a wide variety of seed packets as a way to act out cabin fever? I don't think I'm alone (hahaha)

It hit 60 degrees in Charlotte today so I decided to plant my leaf lettuce, arugula, and spinach seeds. I also planted some cabbage and cauliflower seedlings but I'm keeping my fingers crossed on these :-)

Green Thumb Brown Thumb

Let's share our wonders and woes. I hope this site brings together those with expertise with those who have questions. I'd like to begin by inviting anyone that has an indoor herb garden to share their pictures, successes and challenges for us just starting to learn how to do our own :-)

that's a great idea...rabbits are a problem in my neighborhood--we even have to avoid flowers that they feed on! One year, they EVEN ate a flower bed of marigolds (but just once)! and, the marigolds came back! I have some seeds that have leaves peeking out--already! What are you planting this year?

Thank you Eloise. We built the outbuilding in 2005. I try to get pictures of the rest of the grounds so you have an idea of how things are laid out. We went about it quite organically without too much planning. We primarily

Wow! I'm just stepping into the 21st century with all this technology! How cool is YouTube. there was a lot of videos and a wide range of ideas. Again, thank you for the suggestion. I'll make sure Meredith sees these.

That is a wonderful idea Alax, I hope you share some of your ideas and progress as you go. I saw a youtube video where they have a type of tomatoe for boxes because instead of growing up, they drape down the side, and look pretty as well as being good to eat!

Hello Jennifer, Thank you for creating such a fun blog. I wish I could sit at the computer all day (not really, I'd rather be gardening :) and carry on a conversation with those who drop in. I and my friend Meredith Logan will be sharing ideas on how best to start an indoor herb garden in the winter. Meredith is a well-intended gardener but a little bit of a brown thumb (haha.) We hope you can join us and shed some insights. We'll start around 1 PM Thursday, February 11th.

Thanks for the reply on what's your favorite thing in the garden. Love your Pictures. I love Vegitables and herbs too. My favorite herb is Lemon Basil. It smells so good and it's great in many dishes with tomatos. Have a great day! Jennifer

Well I have several sources of water, 3 bird baths and our waterfall in our pond. Never had this problem before. I have always had hummers. Just wondering if the winter weather we had messed them up. Oh well maybe next year.

Diane, sorry for not making my message more clear - my reminder was about those shrubs that need to be scaled down and in my region (zones 5 & 6) the buds for the next season form on new growth in August so cutting the brunches after July would have…

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
