thanks, diana. i still cry whenever i remember her. i feel guilty that i wasn't there to protect her. it's especially painful since another pet had killed my baby red. i will be burying her in my garden so she'll always be with me. i always get so a…
hi diana! I did separate my red from the others, and temporarily placed her in my greenhouse to let her heal her wounds. Then we made a cage for the barred rock and jailed her there (i read in an online poultry website to take the aggressive chicken…
diana, i just checked my chickens again this morning... i dont think the rhode island's molting as the feathers on the other side of her butt's all gone too, more than the other side and it's now bleeding. As I understand, molting happens because th…
thanks, diana for your input... you mean a chicken can molt when she's just a new pullet (got them as 2 wk old chicks 5 months ago)? Hmmm, I didn't realize that.
Julie, if your chickens molt during winter and it's so cold, what do you do? I live in…
I have a question for you, guys... I noticed that my rhode island reds' feathers (near the tail) are all gone on one side and bare skin is showing, I was wondering what's happening. Then I saw my barred rock this morning pecking on it and eating the…
Oppps! The most important part of this photo has been omitted; the dogs! Two prime examples of old hands around the operations; I'm sure they are your best buds.
me, too! hahaha...
i also got three eggs for the first time today... so cool! but one of them was small and deformed, when i took it from the box, it's got some cracks on the shell... what happened? didn't form well?
cynthia, that's a nice egg! what kind chickens do you have? i also got to have my first eggs 6 days ago, and it was fun going to their coop every morning to check. here's a pic of the eggs 2 days ago (i got 3 more yesterday and today, i think they'r…
there are shavings for birds at the feed stores usually. Be careful what you put in with your chickens because they will eat almost anything, including paper.
Aleta, the barred rock has a little blue specks in it. The red light is good when they decide to get mad at each other and peck (if there is blood), they don't see the blood and it drys up. If the other chickens saw blood they would peck that chicken maybe to death. When my rooster got picked on, I picked him up and held the hurt till it dried up and it heals real fast. I hope that I have not confused you.
Aleta, just add more hay and yes, you can add carpet. The only thing is they sometimes poop in the nest and then you have a mess. Make the nest like a little compartment with lots of hay and they will dig a hole to lay their eggs. In the winter, put a red light facing their nest for heat and the red is not bright for their eyes. I hope that I helped you out.
I had a plymouth rock but she suffered every summer and after having her for 3 years, she died of natural causes. Your chicks look like they are 6 months old? Most of mine are older. Here is my oldest Rhode Island
From first hand, my female Rhode Island Red turned into a male with spurs and feathers. She does not crow, yet. I have heard that if you have ALL roosters someone will turn into a female and start laying eggs. Here is a picture of my female and you can make your own decision.
wow your peeps are growing so quickly! I love to see how different they look. I also have my first barred rock. I am interested in hearing about how your sexlink lays. I have heard they don't even slow down for winter.
This was a friends yard. It is not a fast spreader. It took several years to get this large. If you buy a quart size container you will get a lot of beauty the first year.
We purchased this house in Irvine, Ca. in 1983. I started the main gardens in the back of the house right away. When I got these gardens somewhat established I started my other gardens in the front. My friend Kathy knew and loved my gardens. She call…
