You guys are wild! Look at the window,it's winter out there!
I have a gorgeous Dendrobium in my bedroom window,ESE facing. Gets direct light for a short time in the am,then BRIGHT the rest of the day. It's born 3 more blooms since I got it about 1 month ago. Do you think it would do that if it wasn't happy. Leaves are green and clean,no insects. Color is intense. Everything seems well! Any tips would be welcome. She is a "Lady Pink" Dendrobium.
GydaMarie, I love your orchidariium. I made one myself from an old aquarium but am not using it this year. It is really hard to keep up when I have plants all over the house so I just decided to keep them downstairs with all the other plants.
I call my island in the kitchen my "tropical island" with cooler growing orchids and African violets...i use humidity trays, and we also have a humidifier going because of forced air heat in the house...it gets too dry for us, let alone the plants.
Your garden window is just beautiful! We've been keeping the Phals in an orchidarium that gets about 78 degrees during the day and then down to the low 60's at night. We have the lights on a timer as well as the fans and humidifier. I've only been growing orchids for a few months now, and it's a real challenge to learn about all the different types or orchids and their specific preferred conditions. My Phals are putting out a few new spikes from the exisiting blooming ones, so I guess that's a good sign. BTW...your grandson is quite a handsome young man. :-)
The garden window is a bit cool but it is not the space for growing only showing what is in bloom. The temperature in the garden window is usually in the 60's. It would be too cold to bloom these plants. The growing area in the basement is about 70-73 degrees but drops to the mid 60's at night. Most of the tmeperature change is due to the lights being on during the day and off at night. Each orchid has something that will trigger it's blooming..for example..Phals like a 2 week period in the fall of 55 degree nights and some cattleyas are sping bloomers and must need that change in daylight length. I still haven't figured out how to get most of the bulbophyllums I own and grow to bloom!

Tell me at what temp do you keep these beautiful orchids? I bring mine in in the winter time an am wondering if I should put them in a little cooler room. I just saved one from the grocery store I work in only. It sure has perked up since I place it on some rocks and water, ofcourse I mist it every day also.I've heard that in order to force a bloom to change the temp slightly. Can you give me any help? Thanks
We purchased this house in Irvine, Ca. in 1983. I started the main gardens in the back of the house right away. When I got these gardens somewhat established I started my other gardens in the front. My friend Kathy knew and loved my gardens. She call…
