Kim M. Garner: All I know is to pick off the squash bugs as you see them (unzip the opening and pull them out and squash them and cover up the plant part with dirt) and the remaining plant should be ok, but of course that is before the borer has destroyed ALL of the plants. That is the best to be done, that I can see.

Robert, I live in Oregon and our soil has a high acid content. I've always wondered how to avoid blossom end rot on my tomatoes... now I know! Thank you so much for you post!

That's some nasty looking fungi Linda. I googled it and found this:

Dear Charlotte, Perhaps Linda can send them some of that stinkhorn fungus? I think it would make a nice centerpiece for their dining table. Some folks just don't get that plants are people, too. I am sorry about your situation. ~k

Sorry to hear you have less than courtious neighbors. I am so grateful for my wonderful neighbors and I know how fortunate I am to have them. It is shame that people so often do not think of others.

I am so sorry, Charlotte. Not very nice people, I am afraid.

That is just awful, Charlotte. Maybe it will have to be dug up. There are often laws that a property owner cannot do anything that would affect his neighbor. I would not be happy with that neighbor.

I think I may have answered my own question - if the internet is at all accurate, it's a Lantern Stinkhorn fungus. Aptly named, I smelled it before I saw it. It must grow amazingly fast, because it was not there two days ago. It said they were harmless, and it may have grown from an egg in this wood mulch I used if it was imported from somewhere else. Interesting, but gross.

Guys - I need your help identifying this plant / fungus. I noticed it this morning when I was weeding. It's very phallic looking, red, and smells like death. The flies were swarming all over it. It's growing in pretty hot, dry soil next to my mugo pine. I keep the garden well watered, but it has good drainage, and I wouldn't expect fungus with as much heat and sunlight as this gets. Ick.

I found a good discussion about using epsom salt and other ammendments in a garden:

Diane, sorry for not making my message more clear - my reminder was about those shrubs that need to be scaled down and in my region (zones 5 & 6) the buds for the next season form on new growth in August so cutting the brunches after July would have…

Love this flower. Never was able to grow it though. Thought it was called queen Anns Lace. I think it adds charm to the garden.

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
