Definitely a big fan of weed control fabric here!! I've used it other places in the garden but not yet in layering - interesting! Thanks!
Leilani Comment by Leilani on August 31, 2010 at 8:29am
Yes I use the black fabric stuff as well. I lay the cardboard, then a layer of soil then the fabric then the mulch. Since Im covering grass, there WILL be some grass that pokes though, but I pull it or, if its not close to a plant, pour boiling water on the offender. One thing tho, it does not stop weeds from growing, if the seeds land on top, from birds or the wind, but pulling them is lots more easy. Also when you break through the fabric, to put in a plant, grass that was there will use that opportunity to poke up, but again, its easy to pull. Wal mart can have the best prices. Big Lots, if you have one, but not always avail there.

Allison, I use a black fabric weed mat. It lets light and water through. I cover it with wood chips and get no weeds! I love that stuff. It's not very expensive and light weight , it comes in a roll, and cuts with scissors.

Thank you all! I'm not only just beginning gardening, I'm just beginning this stuff too! I have a bunch of these to go through, but I'm going to read them all. Mostly, I'll keep doing what I'm doing since it's working, and that's the most advice I'm getting here!

Thanks Cathy, that's the key phrase for me: "practically weed free"! And once spring comes around, I will dig it all in anyway, including of course the layer of compost on the top! Interesting too, Cathy and Leilani, about cardboard. Thanks all!

With regard to no dig gardening as the "lasagna" method sems to be, besides my opinion on how it looks and how we are all fitter and healthier for the exercise we get from digging, I forgot to mention that digging compost in also aerates the soil which is necessary for the development of the soil structure and the worms and beneficial microbes. oxygen and an open soil structure is an absolute necessity for good drainage and the healthy development of plant roots.

Your right everyone. It is individual and whatever works for all of us in our area. We all have different conditions and weather to deal with. I have had to deal with rain, flooding my garden, to heat and killing everything. But we just keep on going because its what we are or maybe who we are. Enjoy and be happy with the Peace that brings us all together. Happy Gardening.

Lots of interesting thoughts on how to garden..or not to... and frankly I see good in each. Gardening has always been an experiment, a pleasure and sometimes back-breaking and always a wonder... as in "wonder if this will grow?" One thing I have learned is that there is no one right way for everyone and therein births the conversation that is often the best of Gardeners Index. :)

Being in zone 4 I do not have enough warm/hot weather to make all the compost I need for my gardens. I like the lasagna/layering method because when I have grass clippings, manure, compost I can "build" a new bed. I use cardboard as the first layer- not plastic. I don't see how this is a lazy way of gardening. I also never though of it as unslightly. It is an on going process that I can work on through three seasons if need be. It will be ready to plant in the spring and practically weed free. Everything is organic and I don't worry about chemicals.

I use cardboard to cover my new gardens. Its better than newspaper, just make sure the tape is torn off.
And Geoffry, it isnt trashing your garden, when you recycle and reuse! And guess whats mixed up in the grass clippings? WEEDS!

Lydia, it sounds like you have a much bigger groundhog problem than I do! Funny thing is that our groundhog does not touch the tomatoes (although the chipmunks eat the ones that hang low on the plants). I guess that's because he is so obsessed with…

Thanks Mia and Tanya. These busy eaters will pretty much polish off all the Passion Vine leaves. Not to worry, they come back with a 'passion.'
