Seed Saving and Starting

Seeds can be expensive. I try to collect and save some for next years' crop. I started a few years ago and would like to know other's experiences and techniques.

Daylily Seed 4 Replies

I have tried pollinating my own Daylily. Collecting seed is pretty basic. In the summer about two weeks after a bloom dies, the seed pod behind the bloom will start to dry out, and crack open. Inside…

Lambs Ears seed

I have lambs ears that have gone to seed. My question is when they do this is it better to just let the seed fall or collect it and plant it in the spring? Also I want to give the seeds to a friend t…

Saving seeds 2 Replies

I hate to waste a good seedpod. I love the cheap, open pollinated varieties from the drugstore, though sometimes I'll fork over the dough if it's an heirloom. I usually try to recycle stuff like cosm…

Thanks for the tip Debra. I will try to plant some of the seeds this fall. I read that we could do that here in the south. I'll try to winter sow some too. It's fun to experiment on stuff like that. We'll see.

Thanks Lisa! I looked it up and did end up finding one ripe seed so far. Seems like you have to really watch these closely. Thanks for the add as well and I just love your profile pic!
Mae, I have grown daylily from seeds a few time and really just treat them the same as most of the others. I do gather all my seeds in the summer and they are refrigerated in those little paper coin envelopes that you can buy by the hundreds. I put all the enveloped in a big glass sealed jar and put in some silica gel packets to keep the moisture out and seal the lid tightly. They stay in frig until late Winter early Spring when I take them out to plant. I have had really good luck keeping some seeds for several seasons this way. I just put the daylily seeds in the little plastic greenhouses with a little heat under until they sprout. Good Luck!

Patricia, there's a discussion group here on Daylily Seeds. On Daylily group, click on page 15 there's a detailed instruction there too from Ken Wilkerson. Its fun to watch them grow but the most exciting part is to seee how your new daylily will look like. Have fun!

Debra, I believe that you look for a small dry bud. I have only grown them once. they do not seem to do well in Kansas. I do seem to get help from these two web sites. www.seedimages.com/

This is my first year growing four o'clocks. I have the yellow/white combo and I love them! I've seen some blooms drop off, but am not sure what to look for as far as seed pods being ready. Please let me know if you have experience with these. I really want to harvest the seeds and grow more next year. Thank you!

I also have a question about collecting seeds. Everyone tells me to wait untill the flower is dry to collect it, but I see from above that you have blooms laying on a tray. Can you pick flowers and then havest the seeds. For example zinnia's?

Carolyn, These are 2 seed germination databases which have a wealth of
information. Hope these prove as valuable to you as they have been to me.

I love your website! I've always wanted to document all of the plants in my garden. Right now I have a tall stack of applesauce cups with random seeds in them, hoping the cats don't tip them over before I can plant them. And of course, if I don't put a slip of paper in the cup, I have little idea of what I actually have in there, just the idea that I wouldn't have saved it if I didn't think it would be neat. Recording it all would force me to document things better. Also I"ve just joined a local vegetable seed exchange and it would be great to provide pictures and directions to future gardeners in my neighborhood.

Lydia, it sounds like you have a much bigger groundhog problem than I do! Funny thing is that our groundhog does not touch the tomatoes (although the chipmunks eat the ones that hang low on the plants). I guess that's because he is so obsessed with…

Thanks Mia and Tanya. These busy eaters will pretty much polish off all the Passion Vine leaves. Not to worry, they come back with a 'passion.'
