funny thing The depot here has 4 to 8 pallets of garden seeds in an overhead out side under the canopy. in there garden department like 4 of them are the upside down planters that are popular. they are done with them for the season.

Bob et al -
I use the plastic baggies for storage in the frig.
After 60 to 90 days, I pack them in envelopes to give away, and store at room temp in the dark.

For seed storage: there are small like 1/4 normal size zip lock baggies that I put seed in, squeezing out all the air I can, and toss into the fridge butter dish (Ken mentioned that too) and have not had any mold or germination issues and some have been there a couple of years.

Agreed The key is the breathing plastic will trap and stop that. I bet one could run that envelope through a good printer first and make it nice if they wanted to or for sale at a store or online.

For seed storage, I find envelopes work real well, just right the name of the seeds on the front of the envelope and seal it. They store real easy and stay dry and seeds can still breathe, so to speak. I dry the seeds real good for weeks or months before storing them to be sure there's no moisture to cause mold. When you plant them, it's like opening a new pack of seeds! Real tiny paper bags can also be used but they aren't as easy to close and seal. Another GI gardener David F. wants to know if anyone has saved sunflower seeds before if you can store them in the head or is it best to get them out first. I let the birds eat most of mine and just save a handful so haven't stored a large quantity of them. I referred him to this group. By the way, in the Dollar Stores a box of envelopes is only a dollar. I get the smaller size not the long business size, but those would hold more seeds!

I have done that as well I ran the bottles through the dish washer before use to get rid of the residue. once thoroughly dry will work OK with out the mold issue but if not thoroughly dry will compound the mold issue by trapping the moisture.
The paper bag allows them to breath and drys them out evenly and better. I also sun dried mine a for part of my drying. you could even sun dry them in the paper bag.

Ken, I have many many more bottles for different things than that. Once I get the chance to remember I will get labels that fit the bottles and lebel them all properly. They also fit nicely into my cabinet and when going to use them they fit nicely into a basket I have.

Should work OK.
If I used bottles out of this household, the residue in the bottles would insure that the seeds would not suffer from allergies, have lower blood pressure, and only have occasional pain from arthritis!

We go through so many pill bottles in this house I just started using them.

Lydia, it sounds like you have a much bigger groundhog problem than I do! Funny thing is that our groundhog does not touch the tomatoes (although the chipmunks eat the ones that hang low on the plants). I guess that's because he is so obsessed with…

Thanks Mia and Tanya. These busy eaters will pretty much polish off all the Passion Vine leaves. Not to worry, they come back with a 'passion.'
