Nancy: Having lived in the Philippines for a period of time, without looking at a map, I'd say it really depends on where one lives. Off the top of my head, zones 9 to 13 or so all come into play depending where you are. There are a myriad of websites that list plants suitable for growing in the Philippines she may want to check out. I don't know if the USDA has specific hardiness zones for there or not.

Thanks Bob_ I love learning about new areas. I know from talking with other gardeners that roses vary quite a bit from region to region. I do hop my friend from the Philippines finds her zone. She has pictured some beautiful roses.

Nancy- Zone 9B is capable of some tropicals, some years and depending on location. If you are on the south end of a lake for instance and have a good canopy of oak, sweet gum or hickory pig nut, or, are in a micro-climate zone, then planting semi-tropicals and some tropicals can be rewarding. To be safe, it's best to acknowledge right up front that at some point, the winter kill will get them. This past winter was our first hard one in years so many were taken by surprise. But not to worry, this Spring all the vendors were pushing the greenery at every opportunity all over again. Tampa area seems to be more tolerant than over here in Orlando... further south can be very similar to Hawaii but Hawaii's fairly constant temperature ranges and air patterns are quite different. It's an interesting place to live !! -- Bob

Bob-Thanks I will try that. I am so glad that you do use espomas 3 in 1. It took me so long to find it. I had tried almost everything else.
Is your area considered tropical? I have a new friend from the Philippines and she was asking about zones. I thought that south Florida and Hawaii would have similar climate. I didn't have a chance to look it up. She will do it. I told her that I was sure that there was a group for her zone.

Nancy when you get a root-stock sucker, try breaking it off .. no cutting... and then wipe you finger along the side of your nose enough to get some body oil and rub that on the wound. I know it sounds nuts but it will keep the sucker from sprouting again. Clipping it off just causes more. :)

California rose growing is a lot different than here in FL. When I lived in SOCAL (Redlands) all we had to do was buy a dry-root specimen and put it in the ground and feed it. I don't ever recall any fungus or insect issues... it was just too easy. In FL, we need the fortuniana rootstock or Dr. Huey to keep the nematodes away for a few years... nothing lasts a really long time here. And it's constant feeding and fungicide. But, we can grow roses all year long and 45 days after a severe cut back, we are in bloom again. I do use the espoma 3 in 1 you've mentioned. Cheers! -- Bob

Diane-i have that problem with one of my D.A. roses. It was a gift and I try to cut out all of the suckers. So far i have been successful. I would not buy this grafted rose again.
Annie Zio has the name of a rosier who only supplies only self root roses. I will probably replace it eventually.

Another question, she didn't mention if the canes that are not producing are from the mother root and if the rose is grafted or on it's own root. I never buy grafted only self root because I have had the mother root take over the plant and produce a few or no roses, when this does happen I dig the rose and replace it.

Hey Bob-She mentioned cutting back more severely. I usually leave at least 10-12 inch canes., What I meant is that she cut some of the cane but not too much. It does take them a while to recover from a harsh pruning. Every 2'' inches is usually where mine have their buds and 1/4 in above that is correct.

Here in So-Cal I can cut mine back more severely and they will bounce back totally.

Nancy -- I admire your success with roses and have appreciated very much your willingness to share, so I have a technical question. In a response below, you mention cutting back to 2" or so above a bud -- how does that differ from cutting back to appx 1/4" above a bud when deadheading or pruning back? Wouldn't it leave a stub that will die and possibly attract fungus or other nasties and ultimately need to be cut off anyway? Thanks for your time !! -- Bob

Love this flower. Never was able to grow it though. Thought it was called queen Anns Lace. I think it adds charm to the garden.

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
