Thanks Joan! I've been doing some reading and it is marginally hardy here on Vancouver Island. I think I'm going to try and plant it in a more protected, sunny area and see what happens!

That is a Four O Clock or Mirabilis. It's an annual for us but you can collect seeds or let them drop and depending on where you live, will have a repeat next year.

Does anyone know what this plant is? My friend gave me a seedling this spring and I've kept it in a pot until I figure out what it is. My friend didn't know either since it was at their new house when they moved in. It dies right back in winter (zone 7/8) and come back as a bushy perennial. Also self seeds.

Hello Gail,
We have zoysia grass at our home in Baltimore too. With the extremely hot dry summer we have, our lawn is one of the very few in the neighborhood that is green and healthy. The others are watered constantly. I have not watered my lawn a single time. That is the blessing, once established it is very hearty. We have done a lot of work since buying the house several years ago. We have built raised beds and just now, literally are putting a tiered bed with stone wall, steps down the steep slope and a stone walkway. All of this requires taking up the grass, which we did /are doing in carefully as we have many takers for the sod. The zoysia grass also runs the length of the drive way and borders the back patio and another walkway on the side of the house that were both here when we bought the place. We simply use a string line trimmer (weedwacker) to keep everything tidy looking and have to say, we have less issue than many of our neighbors with other types of grass. For all of the hardscape that we have added, we buried a row of brick as a wheel guide fro the mower. A lot less trimming this way. We have another house in the DC area that does not have zoysia grass and that we water constantly, do not cut too short and still the lawn is crispy. I wish I could replace the entire thing with zoysia grass.

I live in the New England and am blessed and cursed to have Zosha grass (?spellling)... its a very hardy grass that has a root system that is rediculously strong. This is my problem. I had a new driveway put in last year and the grass that surrounds the driveway is now eating its way up into the tar... I have tried weed killer and using a power sprayer to rid the pesky roots as well as trying to rip it out with my hands... ANY WORDS OF WISDOME????

Thanks Joan, I always trim my mums and phlox until the 4th of July and then let them go. My Phlox have huge blooms but the mums are smaller. I will try your idea of extending the bloom period by doing some but not all.

I have a few plants I added this year to the yard that don't like standing up. I plan on getting some of the rings that are used for peonies and try those.

Couple of answers--I have divided Blackberry lilies but also planted a flat of the seeds(I froze them first and it worked, not sure if they needed it). They nearly all germinated. On the Shastas, yes, you can trim like mums. There is a process called the Chelsea Chop. It's name comes from doing it about when the Chelsea Flower Show is on. You trim, phlox, physotegia, mums, daisies, etc. and it shortens them and also delays bloom. So, you could chop some of them and leave others and extend you bloom period. One thing is that the subsequent blooms might be smaller but certainly more manageable.

Diane I have the same problem. I have a lot of cut flowers that I have in the house and give away. Stacking is the only answer, but keeping them cut back seems to work the best. Saves on dead heading latter anyway. There are also shorter varieties in the market that are more tidy. The taller varieties do make for a better cut flower.

Lydia, it sounds like you have a much bigger groundhog problem than I do! Funny thing is that our groundhog does not touch the tomatoes (although the chipmunks eat the ones that hang low on the plants). I guess that's because he is so obsessed with…

Thanks Mia and Tanya. These busy eaters will pretty much polish off all the Passion Vine leaves. Not to worry, they come back with a 'passion.'
