can anyone suggest plants for a totally shaded Michgan yard my goal is to not use any annuals
all suggested are neede
i already have hostas & hydranges but will welcome repeats of what has worked for you!
thank-you
if it is dry shade, epimedium makes a great ground cover....not very showy flowers, but the leaves are beautiful all through the growing season...very delicate.
I also love Bergenia, although it likes just a touch of sun at some point during the day.
Astilbe is good, but requires a rich soil with regular water to be strong and vigorous.
The deciduous hollies are great shrubs for the shade with beautiful berries, and not as finicky as the evergreen hollies.
Hope this helps!!! Not all are natives, but well adapted without being invasive.
My shady areas I've tried to keep with native plants. I use ferns, Jack in the pulpits, Trilliums, Phlox, Violets, but they are invasive, spread real fast. Certain cranes bills ( wild geranium). For shrubs I have rhododendrons, high bush cranberrys and azaleas. In the spring bleeding hearts and blue bells are nice. Summer plants I used some that can tolerate some shade. Like Fox Gloves and forget me nots.
Nancy, you said: "Karen A red door in Feng Shui is good luck."
After a few beers, that would translate to: "Shhh-Karen, a red door in Sheng Fooey ish good Yuck!"
Birds are really active the last few days. I've had Pinon Jays, Robins, Nashville Warblers, Grosbeaks, Tanagers, about 15 hummers and unidentified vireos, until this morning. Finally, I was able to get a couple photos of the Plumbeous Vireo. Please…
Every Spring there is at least one new piece about a mocking bird dive bombing some poor 5-9ers as they try to get into their buiding because of a close by nest. They really are interesting birds. I agree, inquisitive and outgoing but not mean.
