GenGen, why don't you box garden, if you do an in ground one just use 4x4 non treated lumber and fill with topsoil, you would need more 4x4's for the in ground one to line the bottom so the sand doesn't leach up to the topsoil, if you do an above ground box you shouldn't have issues with the sand working it's way up.

Hey GM Haynes :) I used to live in spokane till 8 years ago. i had a wonderful garden(s) there i miss them! i now live in Orofino an hour upriver from Lewiston ID.. and i'm struggling with my gardens here- we live next to the clearwater river so its sandy soil. not complete sand but soil with sand. makes it hard to work with- have to add ferts more often and water more often. good drainage though lol.

Great idea GydaMarie. I also like to put a few fresh herbs and couple of cloves of garlic into a decorative bottle and fill it with a good quality olive oil as a gifts. You can do the same to flavour vinegar. These are both nice gifts for cooks.

I planted my herbs in an Earth Box this year...Thyme, Sage, Chives, and Parsley. They are all so healthy! We've kept the box right on the deck, so it's handy for me to step outside and get some fresh clips...I need to do some more harvesting and drying and am hoping to have some dried and ready to give to me girls in their Christmas packages...they're good cooks.

Thanks for the tip Deb! Lucky for me sand and gravel is easy to find in Arizona. I added several trowels full to the pot from the wash out back and will water carefully and see how that does, if it needs more at least it's just a trip behind the house instead of to the nursery. Perhaps thats the reason my oregano isnt flourishing so added a bunch to that pot too! Was using a rich potting mix that I use with other plants to retain the moisture since the desert just dries everything out here.

I just ran across an article by P.Allen Smith on Thyme:
a plant as durable as thyme can be a total bust if I don't set the plant up for success by amending the soil with plenty of sand and pea gravel to minimize the effects of excessive moisture

He says all the mediterranean herbs must have very loose soil to do well.

I got my Rosemary to propogate by laying a piece of it over to the ground and staking it down. This happened accidentally once and since then I have been making lots of plants to give away. Puts on roots in no time.

Any suggestions on how to get thyme to grow well? I potted it and put it on my patio steps. Gets lots of sun and daily water and is still dying...this is my second plant. I live in Arizona so the sun can get harsh so I put it in a spot that gets filtered sunlight but to no avail! Help save my thyme!!
