Thanks for the tip Deb! Lucky for me sand and gravel is easy to find in Arizona. I added several trowels full to the pot from the wash out back and will water carefully and see how that does, if it needs more at least it's just a trip behind the house instead of to the nursery. Perhaps thats the reason my oregano isnt flourishing so added a bunch to that pot too! Was using a rich potting mix that I use with other plants to retain the moisture since the desert just dries everything out here.

I just ran across an article by P.Allen Smith on Thyme:
a plant as durable as thyme can be a total bust if I don't set the plant up for success by amending the soil with plenty of sand and pea gravel to minimize the effects of excessive moisture

He says all the mediterranean herbs must have very loose soil to do well.

I got my Rosemary to propogate by laying a piece of it over to the ground and staking it down. This happened accidentally once and since then I have been making lots of plants to give away. Puts on roots in no time.

Any suggestions on how to get thyme to grow well? I potted it and put it on my patio steps. Gets lots of sun and daily water and is still dying...this is my second plant. I live in Arizona so the sun can get harsh so I put it in a spot that gets filtered sunlight but to no avail! Help save my thyme!!

Today I found 3 packs of herb seeds that I forgot I had and didn't get planted!
Basil, Thyme and Chives...for my zone 6 they are supposed to be planted in Feb-March. Does anyone know if I plant them this late (mid July) how they would do? I could use pots or planters and bring them in when the temps start to drop.

If it's slugs eating your basil at night try using broken egg shells at the base of plant. Slugs hate those. If it's earwigs...they don't like garlic.

Lydia, it sounds like you have a much bigger groundhog problem than I do! Funny thing is that our groundhog does not touch the tomatoes (although the chipmunks eat the ones that hang low on the plants). I guess that's because he is so obsessed with…

Thanks Mia and Tanya. These busy eaters will pretty much polish off all the Passion Vine leaves. Not to worry, they come back with a 'passion.'
