Gardeners-Index

Hey, all! Here it is, the beginning of winter with a lot of days ahead of us until spring finally arrives. I thought it would be fun if we shared suggestions of something that you enjoy, newly discovered, or tried for the first time that was fun/cool/interesting. Examples might be a neat website, a great book you couldn't put down, a movie you loved, a recipe that's to die for, a joke - hopefully you get the idea. Anything goes, really.

I'll start it off. Some of you may already know about and use Pandora, but I only began to use it about a month ago. For those unfamiliar, Pandora is a free personalized online radio where you can customize the music to your taste. Just type in your favorite artist, and Pandora will compile a station consisting of that artist and similiar artists in that genre for your listening pleasure. Check it out at www.pandora.com

Ha Ha - sounds like a lot of very busy people! Never met a lazy gardener, have you?
It's pork and sourkraut apparently here in southcentral Pa - I'm a transplant, so never picked the tradition up. Sorry, but yuck.
Dale, I do the same as you with the how-to books. I love decorating books, so when I'm not gardening in the warm months, I'm changing the house out and swapping things around here and there. I love crafts, too, so I'm either knitting, crocheting, or picking up something new that interests me for that week. I think I have ADD when it comes to crafting - there's so many cool things to try.

Saw Avatar in 3D this week. If you like sci-fi and a great escape, then I highly recommend. We loved it.

Oh, and is anyone going to catch the new HGTV show with the Australian guy Jamie something? He does back yard redo's to the 10th power. Caught some of the commercials and I was blown away by the transformations. Very interesting stuff.

Sheryl, any suggestions on trying to find a long-lost grandmother? We believe they divorced in 1936 or thereabouts, but have VERY little information other than her name. I'm trying to put the piece of my father's family puzzle together. Found 1 brother already!

If you give me her name I can try to find her at Ancestry.com. Just let me know I'd be glad to help.

I hadn't checked out Pandora yet. My daughters just told me...duh, Mom, we've used that 'forever'. lol! I will use it at work. Thanks!

My other favorite site to check out, besides on here, is www.recipezaar.com. I can find any recipe there and most have reviews of what they did to make it better. :)

I have never had much luck with houseplants. Since Nov 09, I've been having alot of issues with mild asthma. So, after reading an article on Dr. Oz fb page about houseplants being air purifiers, I went to WMart and bought 5 small plants to start out with that were on his list. Soooo, I'm starting small and going from there. IF these babies live for a month then I'll graduate to the next larger size. :) And, it was so nice to walk thru the plants, look at bulbs and bareroots for the spring. :) :) I loved reading all the labels...dreaming of where they will go...then coming home and drawing out garden plans.

As far as keeping sane during cabin fever, lol, I've been scrapbooking history books for each daughter. It's been fun to create a page here and there and to reminisce about when they were little. They are 24, 23, and 18, and I do wish I'd taken better notes on the back of the pic. Sigh...but mercy...I barely had time to breathe much less document everything! lol!! But...I will do better one day when I have grandbabies....lol!

I use my downtime in the winter to paint gourds, wood burn them or make bowls to embellish...I get them ready so they are all cleaned, and cut before the weather gets bad casue you can't do much cleaning gourd inside...dirty work. Also do some painting on canvas or water color paper. Not that good at it but I'm still learning. Last January I took a stained glass class at the senior citizen tech center. Lots of hard work goes into stained glass pieces and I found out more than I like to do. I did enjoy learnign how to cut glass and grind to a smooth finish. I use that in mosaic pieces now because it doesn't really have to be so exact for mosaic as it does for stained glass when it has to fit perfectly before you do the soldering. At least I learned something I can use in another art form.

Well I have a few croucus sprouting their little heads out. I have read a few books this winter, but keep pulling out my gardening books and replanning my garden, garden shed, and patio. The book I am on now is, "a History of God" by Karen Armstong. It is a great book for anyone to read. I am painting my front room and kitchen again, and trying to get some art work done.

Hi Tracey,
I am new to this group. My husband and I began to read the "Classics" and we wanted to share this experience this together so we began with Sherlock Holmes. Two nights a week we sit in our botanical room with a fire in the fireplace and he will read to me books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. What fun!

Well I have several sources of water, 3 bird baths and our waterfall in our pond. Never had this problem before. I have always had hummers. Just wondering if the winter weather we had messed them up. Oh well maybe next year.

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
