1. When did you start gardening? Not seriously until we built our house 8 years ago.

2. Who is/was your mentor or influence that got you started? My grandmother, mother, aunt, and when I was in college I started watching Martha Stewart and loved her Turkey Hill property in Ct.

3. How would you describe your gardening style? In the front yard - more formal; in the backyard cottagey - colorful and vibrant with lots going on

4. How much time do you spend in your garden? As much as I can which means all day in the spring, and because I'm home full time in the summer I am floating around out there at all times.

5. My biggest gardening failure was: Early on in my marriage at our first house, the kids were little and I didn't have a lot of time. I thought you could just stick flowers in the ground without preparing a bed. It was a mess.

6. My biggest gardening success is (go ahead and brag!) Transforming this lot from an empty field to my bit of heaven. Everything in the ground here my husband and I did ourselves including over 100 trees and shrubs. Also the little pond we built last year - love my pond.

7. The tried and true plant that everyone must have is: Sedum. I love all sedums - you just can't go wrong with them.

8. If I was in charge, I would ban this from all gardens: Ivy

9. When it comes to the garden, my husband/wife/other family member thinks: I go a little overboard, but they like the end result.

10. If you found me in my garden I'd probably look like: A sweaty mess, but because I'm vain I'd still be wearing makeup and jewelry

11. When it comes to weeds I: I look for every shortcut and tool there is, but in the end find a strange satisfaction with sitting and pulling by hand.

12. The one thing (or two or whatever) that makes me crazy about the neighbor's landscaping is: Have they never heard of hedge trimmers or clippers? You can barely get to the front door at the house across the street because none of their shrubs have ever been cut back and shaped up. Another thing is when people don't plant any trees because they don't want to "bother with the leaves". My heavens, do they know it'll be quite a few years off before they have to worry about raking leaves?

13. I can't stand it when: I have to fix the mistakes I've made or something doesn't work in the garden because I was too hasty.

14. I absolutely love it when: I discover a new plant and it actually thrives and does well for me.

15. My favorite place to sit in the garden is: My adirondack chair beside my pond. Love watching the fish swimming around having a good time.

16 I also love to relax in the garden and...watch the birds. Sometimes it's better than t.v.

17. When I'm not out in the garden, I like to: Read, knit, bake, shop, listen to great music, watch good movies and spend time with my family.

Almost done...but being slightly obsessive/compulsive, I can't end at 17 - we gotta go to 20....

18. Something I'd love to have if I could afford it: A lovely victorian gazebo.

19. When it comes to garden decorations, embellishments and doo dads, my taste is: Eclectic, whimisical, but thrifty.

20. Something about me that might surprise you is: I'm basically an introvert and happy with solitary activities despite the public persona I have (I'm one of those people involved in a lot of activities because I don't know how to say no)

1. When did you start gardening? 20 April 1953, Drexel Hill, PA 19026

2. Who is/was your mentor or influence that got you started? Father & Mother - My Dad was a USDA Forester from the left coast; my Mom grew up in Shreveport, LA., on a farm, and come spring… she just had to plant!

3. How would you describe your gardening style? Free form… sort of.
When I purchased our farm in NC [5 acres of fallow land, 6 foot high weeds, 1 tree, and terrain that only varies 18” between any two points on the lot], I asked my Dad what trees should I plant to return the lot to its native state. He replied, “Anything that will grow.” Man, he said, has introduced so many trees and plants that over the centuries that have “naturalized,” its hard define “native.” You can define it that native for 1700 would be these species… but that is not the same as 1900. Look at Kudzu.
So, I have transplanted an azalea from a mountain top in Roanoke, VA., from an elevation of 3980 ft above sea level, to the 28 ft that I live. It took 4 years to bloom, but it is a beauty. I have trees from friends in a half dozen states… different temp zones, different altitude, different rainfall. If they grow, it’s great. If not, no humans or animals were hurt in the taping of the program.
I go for big aesthetics. With 5 acres to fill, 3 day lilies in a group won’t cut it. It has taken a bunch of years to build groups of plants in the dozens of the same kind. This is why gathering and growing from seed is so important to me. I don’t make enough money to drop hundreds of dollars on plants each year.

Too many words on this answer.

4. How much time do you spend in your garden? When it looks good, too much. When it looks like crap, not enough.

5. My biggest gardening failure was: A kitchen garden. I planted in raised beds with good soil, 4, 4 foot by 4 foot, garden squares. Early growth was great. Then came the cabbage worms, tomato horn worms, Japanese beetles, and a neighbor’s rooster that totaled our entire effort two seasons back to back. We don’t believe in using chemicals on food that we are going to eat, so we surrendered the garden to the bugs.
Haven’t had one since. Ironically, when we lived in suburban VA Beach, we had so much produce out of the garden, that after we canned everything we were going use in the coming season, we still had to give it away!

6. My biggest gardening success is (go ahead and brag!) Reforesting my property to a state that looks “natural,” but the fact is that every tree that someone sees, was planted by me. There is a elder widow lady that lives in front of us. She has a mercury vapor light on a telephone pole in her back yard that shown directly into our bedroom window, on MY side of the bed.
I didn’t want to plant a wall of fast growing Southern Yellow Pine on the boundary of our properties across the adjoining back yards.
Rather, I went up on the second floor of my house with a walkie talkie, and gave a walkie talkie to my 5 year-old son, and a handful of surveyor flags, to place them at a right angle to the widow’s property. I ran up and down stairs to make sure that where the flags were placed, trees would grow and block her light, without looking like I built an unfriendly wall to shut her out.
In 6 years, I could go to sleep without a blinding “city” light, shining in my eyes.

7. The tried and true plant that everyone must have is: Any Day Lily

8. If I was in charge, I would ban this from all gardens: Annuals

9. When it comes to the garden, my husband/wife/other family member thinks: I’m crazy. They love my flowers, but, don’t want to help maintain anything. But they still love the flowers, and oh by the way, can I have a cutting/start of your [fill in the blank].

10. If you found me in my garden I'd probably look like: A gray haired hippie [with short hair] in cutoffs, tank-top, and Crocs. Sorry about the last. It would have been Earth Shoes, or old Nikes in an earlier time, but my signature shoe for home and WORK are now Crocs.

11. When it comes to weeds I: I work to super mulch my beds to the point that weeds won’t grow. One year, I OD’d a day lily bed with pine needles raked up from the woods, to the point that other lilies were coming up, but this one bed was fallow. Lifting some of the cover, the lily leaves had come up, but couldn’t punch through the needles. They were yellow and nasty. Blooms that year were bad, but NO WEEDS.
So, I work to eliminate the possibility for weeds to start. Those beds that I done well, I don’t have to touch. It’s just getting the new ones trained.

12. The one thing (or two or whatever) that makes me crazy about the neighbor's landscaping is: Cookie cutter landscape. This plant goes here. That plant goes there. Offer to give them something new and they say, no thank you, we like this just the way it is.

13. I can't stand it when: My garden tractor craps out.

14. I absolutely love it when: My garden tractor runs.

15. My favorite place to sit in the garden is: Under a corkscrew pussy willow, at the foot of the front steps of the house.

16 I also love to relax in the garden and... This question is rhetorical isn’t it? Drink a cold one…? Read…? When is work in the garden ever done?

17. When I'm not out in the garden, I like to: Wish I was out in the garden. Otherwise, be with my son, daughter-in-law, and grandbaby, my daughter and her friends, and all of our extended family.
Camping, hiking, spelunking, skiing, in no particular order.

18. Something I'd love to have if I could afford it: A BobCat front end loader, with a full compliment of accessories

19. When it comes to garden decorations, embellishments and doo dads, my taste is: Eclectic

20. Something about me that might surprise you is: I was Johnny Appleseed in a former life. Just ask Shirley MacLaine.

1. When did you start gardening? Officially...1986 my husbands and my first year owning a home; unofficially, I don't remember a time that I was not made to be in my grandfather's garden, weeding.

2. Who is/was your mentor or influence that got you started? My beloved grandfather.

3. How would you describe your gardening style? Free-style; whatever looks good and works. I'm not afraid or intimidated by plants, I don't get stuck on the color wheel system of planting and there are no rules to gardening just educate yourself on the needs/growing habits of the plants.

4. How much time do you spend in your garden? A lot more than I thought when I joined this site; easily 15-20 hours/week.

5. My biggest gardening failure was: Hmm...I guess I don't consider anything as a failure but instead a learning experience. I will also not give up and try again.

6. My biggest gardening success is (go ahead and brag!) I love to pat myself on the back because I, for 10 years, had blooming from January through October...maybe even November depending on the year. We are in a "new to us" home since last September and are gutting the 1/2 acres we now have. My intentions are to once again, have continual bloom for 10 months.

7. The tried and true plant that everyone must have is: Lilies...Asiatic, Oriental, Day and Tiger Lily.

8. If I was in charge, I would ban this from all gardens: English Ivy...a noxious weed.

9. When it comes to the garden, my husband/wife/other family member thinks: They love it!

10. If you found me in my garden I'd probably look: Dirty & sweaty, yet as Tracey, with makeup and wearing earrings.

11. When it comes to weeds I: Pull weeds and if necessary use Round-Up.

12. The one thing (or two or whatever) that makes me crazy about the neighbor's landscaping is: Not weeding, mowing, trimming. They don't have to enjoy gardening, as I do, but it would be nice if they'd just keep their yards neat.

13. I can't stand it when: My dogs poop where they shouldn't!

14. I absolutely love it when: I can sit and relax having gotten to the point of just maintaining.

15. My favorite place to sit in the garden is: I don't have a favorite spot yet.

16 I also love to relax in the garden and... Have quiet time.

17. When I'm not out in the garden, I like to: Shop, fellowship with friends, watch a movie...whatever.

18. Something I'd love to have if I could afford it: Someone else to come in and build me a pond and or greenhouse made from old doors and windows.

19. When it comes to garden decorations, embellishments and doo dads, my taste is: If it's copper or rusty metal, it works.

20. Something about me that might surprise you is: I'm bold and not shy about walking right up to a strangers door to ask them for a piece of their plant. It has to be unusual and not something that I could easily purchase at a nursery. I did this with the Matilija Poppy (Fried Egg Plant) the first time I saw it. I was at my sons baseball game and in a garden across the street from the field was this amazing plant. I walked over to look at it and the owner was very obliging, telling me to come back in October for a piece of the plant, which I did.

1. When did you start gardening? 2000

2. Who is/was your mentor or influence that got you started? My sister Deanne, her gardens are amazing.

3. How would you describe your gardening style? I blend the perennials and mixed borders into the natural surroundings. I live in NH so the backdrop for many of my gardens are native birches and white pines. I tend to focus more on color, texture and light than on individual plants. The gardens are a canvas, the flowers are my palette, the landscape is the sculpture that connects everything. Also, when I design a garden, I look at what I want to see from inside the house -- including night lighting. I see beautiful trees, shrubs, and endless color when I look out the windows and every season has a feature.

4. How much time do you spend in your garden? I work full time -- from home --- so spend as much time as I can during breaks and on weekends. Probably 20 hours a week total -- it's become too much to manage alone!

5. My biggest gardening failure was: this year I started digging out an area about 20x10 ft -- wanted to make a new bed with some stone steps leading down to a garden I made last year -- can't get anyone to help finish (contractors are too busy in the summer for small jobs) and it's too much for me.

6. My biggest gardening success is (go ahead and brag!) 2000 gallon koi pond – I love the sound of the water.

7. The tried and true plant that everyone must have is: Amsonia hubrichtii – I love the foliage and in the fall it turns a gorgeous shade of butterscotch yellow.

8. If I was in charge, I would ban this from all gardens: Violets

9. When it comes to the garden, my husband/wife/other family member thinks: People think my gardens are gorgeous but they think I’m a little nuts because there are so many of them.

10. If you found me in my garden I'd probably look like: An employee at your favorite nursery except I often run around barefoot when I’m deadheading and I’ve been known to go out there in pajamas

11. When it comes to weeds I: attack, kill, and when all else fails cover them with more plants! Hostas work great.

12. The one thing (or two or whatever) that makes me crazy about the neighbor's landscaping is: The people behind me cut down all their trees!!! I’ve had to build living walls and plant strategically placed trees to hide the neighbors. To make it worse, they built a tree house last year that hovers just above my new living wall.

13. I can't stand it when: I almost step on a snake – of course if I wore shoes more often this wouldn’t be a problem!

14. I absolutely love it when: Memorial day weekend, every year, I have pink lady slippers blooming in my woods.

15. My favorite place to sit in the garden is: The pond watching the frogs. I used to watch the fish but a great blue heron has been visiting me for 3 yrs now – I have fish but I never see them.

16 I also love to relax in the garden and... daydream
17. When I'm not out in the garden, I like to: Take photos (but a lot of that is in the garden too)

Almost done...but being slightly obsessive/compulsive, I can't end at 17 - we gotta go to 20....
18. Something I'd love to have if I could afford it: A full time gardener to help with the deadheading and weeding.

19. When it comes to garden decorations, embellishments and doo dads, my taste is: Subdued

20. Something about me that might surprise you is: I’m a widow - 6 1/2 years.

My oregano grows like weeds. It's in the mint family and is really invasive. It is in full/part shade with pretty heavy clay soil.
