Win Gil Nelson's new book, "Best Native Plants for Southern Gardens: A handbook for Gardeners, Homeowners, and Professionals" by leaving a comment on the Florida Native Plant Society's blog by August 4th. http://fnpsblog.org

This book covers the 8 southeastern states from Virginia to Louisiana, but it does not include tropical south Florida (planting zones 10 & 11).

"Best Native Plants for Southern Gardens" is filled to the brim with important information on native plants and is a must for any serious gardener in the southeastern region of the country.

Hope we get some of that rain this weekend like they are predicting. Everything in my yard is pretty dry!

Hi Bob, I haven't kept track of germination rates, but the heritage/seed savers seeds don't seem to do as well as the commercial brands such as Burpee, Park, etc., but I love growing the heritage seeds to offer more variety in my harvest. I don't spend much time growing flowers from seed, unless they're for a meadow. In this case I purchase separate species of seeds, usually native rather than the regional blends for the Southeast Region, because they contain too many prairie flowers that work better for Texas.

Glad you've enjoyed my gardening adventures.

Ginny: Been reading your blog and associated pages... There's a ton of great information and experience in there, thank you! I read several comments about seeds but was wondering for your personal use, which company's seeds have reliable germination rates for the garden basics such at tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, etc. ??

Thanks very much for you participation here and for your advice. - Bob

Welcome to Florida, Jackie! Actually, cool weather vegetables are started here in October and can be grown right through the winter. You might want to pick up "Vegetable Gardening in Florida" by James Stephens, which includes a chart with ideal planting times for most vegetables for north, central and south Florida. Also, I've been writing about my adventures as a transplanted gardener on www.transplantedgardener.com

Right now I'm getting ready for my second tomato crop and the pepper will poroduce right through our hot summers. Good luck.

Good Morning Everyone! Being new to FL gardening, (down from beautiful Michigan) I'm confused on some of the growing seasons...Learning that Feb is a good time to start a bed?? Hmmm back home you couldn't even SEE your beds until at least April! LOL Sooo what can I plant now?

How to put "organics" in the garden. Not all of us have access to compost or manure, etc. but for about 9 dollars, you can get a 40 pound bag of rabbit food from a feed store. The product is basically alfalfa and can be worked into the soil or just spread around plants. Roses in particular respond well to it. We use it to enrich any new garden bed and to refresh beds in February (in Florida.)

Does anyone know where to purchase Queen Anne's Lace seeds or plants? Saw some at the Botanical Gardens in Gainesville ... asked them where they got them and said they did not know ... can anybody help me on this?

Ginny...so true. It's often difficult balancing birding, gardening and being cat crazy. Our yard is a fortress-like impoundment, with the cat having only that space as his territory. He's been leash-trained since a kitten. Folks who claim a cat can't be leash-trained are wrong...one need start early, and have patience and persistence. Unrestrained cats deplete the native bird population. They're hard-wired to hunt, and equipped to be good at it.

Sheryl, that shouldn't be a problem, I have a seed feeder in close proximity and the humming birds seem happy enough to share. They just seem to perch on the tiny twigs where the big guys cant get to. Chech the surronding territory, perhaps someone…
