Either sun or shade works. But a sunny spot will have longer working season due to warmer earlier in spring and later in the fall. But if I had to choose a shady spot to use the sunny spot for a graden I would use a shady spot for the compost. I have to use shady spots to maximize the sunny spots for garden.

l'd like to start a compost pile. Where would be a good place to build one, a sunny location or a shady place?

Thank your for the comment Howard. I got the seeds for free. Should I just leave them. Just put compost over them and maybe some leaves?

When you start your second batch add a layer of the old compost to the new pile to get it started.

It makes sense. But it is a rather expensive way and mother nature will do it for free.
And yes the worms will not like the heat. They like to work from 45-95 degrees. I find worms below the composter. After the compost has cooled they will feed on the compost that is finished and further decompose it. But if you put the compost in your garden the worms will work on it as long as you don't kill them with a tiller.

Compost Tea
1 1/2 gal. of fresh compost
4 1/2 gal. of warm water
Pour water into a 5 gallon bucket. Scoop the compost into a cotton, burlap, or pantyhose sack, tie it closed, and put into the water. Cover the bucket and let it steep for 3 to 7 days. Pour the solution into a watering can or hand held sprayer, and give plants a good spritizing with it every two to three weeks throughout the growing season. Dump the solids back into your compost pile. This also from The Gardning for Dummies book.

I got this out of gardning for dummies.
Compost Booster Tonic
1 can beer
1 can of regular cola (not diet)
1/2 cup of weak tea water
2 tbsp. of baby shampoo
Mix all the ingredients together and pour into a 20 gallon hose end sprayer. Saturate your compost pile every time you add a new, foot deep layer of ingredients to it.
1 cup of ammonia

When my compost bins are finished composting can I add it to the vegetable garden bed I plan to plant in next spring. Also after I screened out the big bits can the composte be stored? If so how. If not why?

My get-togethers also got off to a rocky start but now I met in person 3 of my GI friends and look forward to meeting the others. I just learned about a Garlic Festival in late September in a town on the other side of Hudson River and hope to round…
