First spring butterflies? 3 Replies

In Central VA, I usually see Cabbage Whites and Sulphurs around mid-March.  There's about another month to wait!

Yesterday was a lot of fun chasing butterflies. Meadow Fritillary were on the sedum as well as a Gray Hairstreak and I had a Monarch still laying eggs but have not seen any cats.

Today a gang of Pearl Crescent Butterflies made there presence known chasing off some of the skippers.

Stone Crop Sedum is a great nectar plant for all the butterflies.

During the Panhandle Butterfly House's Fall Monarch Festival (Oct 2009),the Gulf Fritillaries were migrating south along the Gulf Coast. I caught this group along the Navarre Sound.

Barb - The Phaon and the Pearl Crescent are very similar. The Phaon is predominately a southern flyer so Randy is right it is a Pearl. Lovely shot no matter what!

Thanks Mia and Tanya. These busy eaters will pretty much polish off all the Passion Vine leaves. Not to worry, they come back with a 'passion.'
