Birds are really active the last few days. I've had Pinon Jays, Robins, Nashville Warblers, Grosbeaks, Tanagers, about 15 hummers and unidentified vireos, until this morning. Finally, I was able to get a couple photos of the Plumbeous Vireo. Please note the elongated thick eye ring that extends to the lorus. That is the idenitfying mark. I've been trying all week to get a photo. Pictures aren't the best as it is fairly gloomy now and the shots were taken through the window. The Western Tanager in flight was taken yesterday. Enjoy!

Every Spring there is at least one new piece about a mocking bird dive bombing some poor 5-9ers as they try to get into their buiding because of a close by nest. They really are interesting birds. I agree, inquisitive and outgoing but not mean.

The mockingbird is the State bird of several states including my home state of FLorida. They will put their wings up when they are on the ground to shade where they are looking for insects....the shadow gives them a better view. The male makes the nest and then invites the female to come check it out. I have had many a mockingbird dive at my head when you get too close to thier nests...also heard them sing ALL NIGHT before...They are really interesting birds.

When they were building homes across the street from me, the Mockingbirds would make all kinds of imitating noises like a drill or a staccato noise like a roof nailer. They also imitate cats, ringing phones and it seems many things they hear a few times. They are kind of fearless but they don't seem to be really mean birds. Very curious about everything.

Mockers are such fun birds. They come in droves when my mulberry tree is in fruit, otherwsie I do not see too many. I remember being at a freind's house /farm and distinctly hearly a duck. She had a couple of small pond on the property and it bodered the potomac river, so not surprising to hear a duck, but we were well away form any water. We kept hearing it and worried that something was wrong, we looked around for the source. Found him sitting on a fence post going through a whole vocabulary of sounds, from gates closing to quacking ducks. Such silly birds.

Mockingbirds imitate the songs of other birds and sometimes animals, I think. I love to watch them. They have interesting movements, do a lot of wing exercises, it seems. They are pretty tough birds--often seen chasing big crows away from their nests.

Hello just checking in love the pics I didnt realize how long the beak is or long I should say on your humming birds. Love the peacock and chics, and the camoflauge of that coopers hawk. Carninals hiding and feasting in the tomatoes and the doves. Can someone explain about the mocking bird and how it got it's name??? enjoyed your pics hope to post some soon.

Love the hummer and zinnias Cathy. I'm not a big zinnia fan but I can not longer resist. Next year I'm going to get some!

On a quick trip to Walmart I of course had to check out their plant area and they had 4" pots of tall blooming zinnias for $1.75 each. I brought a few home, put them in a deck rail planter next to my hummer nectar feeder and - THANK YOU GAIL - it worked the next day!
